El Reno’s Ray to compete in National Quiz Tournaments Individual Championship

An El Reno High School student will compete this weekend in a national academic tournament

The top single player competition for quiz bowl, National Academic Quiz Tournaments Individual Player National Championship Tournament will be held this Sunday, April 7, in Rosemont, Ill.

EHS’ Riley Ray will compete in a 260-player field. Thirty-two states, the District of Columbia and South Korea will be represented in the sixth championship of its kind.

Maple School basketball player Tannah Ferguson was named to the 2024 Oklahoma Rural Elementary Schools All-State Tournament Team.

Maple’s seventh- and eighth-grade team made the ORES state tournament in Division III.

Underwood OHCE holds meeting

The Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education Club met recently at a local restaurant for its March meeting. Delpha Miklautsch served as hostess and lesson leader. Others present were Bernita Davis, Vicki Duncan, Janan Fletcher and Ann Ricketts.

Miklautsch gave the lesson on “Is Your Glove Box Ready For An Emergency?”

Okarche speech wins regional title

During spring break, the Okarche Speech Team participated in the Southwest Regional Speech and Debate Tournament.

The team as a whole placed first in sweepstakes. Placing first through fourth individually qualified members for state.

Jace Rother won first in Poetry and second in Humorous Interpretation with his duet partner, Chloe Goble.

Goble also placed first in Monologue and third in Humorous Interpretation.

Rylie Bomhoff placed first in Humorous Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation.

OHCE to award two $500 scholarships

The Canadian County Association for Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) is giving two $500 scholarships to students planning to attend a two- or four-year college or university.

Scholarships are available to any 2024 graduating senior or new G.E.D. certificate holder who resides in Canadian County and will be attending an institution of higher education full time.

Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need, academic record and character recommendations.

Birth - McCoy Layne Denny

Body

GIRL – Bailey and Paige Denny of El Reno are parents of a girl, McCoy Layne Denny, born March 10 at Mercy Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds, 12.5 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

McCoy has a brother, Brand Denny.

Maternal grandparents are Jeff and Mindy Hesser of Kingfisher. Great-grandparents are Jack and Billie Hesser and the late Gloria Hesser, the late Carl Hiner and the late Carol Hiner, all of Stillwater.

Lamplighters OHCE meets at Mount Zion

Lamplighters OHCE of Canadian County met recently at Mount Zion Global Methodist Church. Carol Stine called the meeting to order, while Donna Wehmuller offered a devotional from Mornings with Jesus.  

Maxine Little read minutes from the last meeting, with Patricia Morrison giving the treasury report.

Morrison was birthday honoree.

A thank-you card was read from the Canadian County Sheriff’s Department for the cookies given to them from the Lamplighters group.
