Rosino plans sunrise vigil for Oklahoma pandemic losses

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Paul Rosino, R-Oklahoma City, will host a remembrance vigil for Oklahomans who’ve lost loved ones from COVID-19.

Rosino said people are asked to gather before sunrise on the south plaza of the state Capitol on Monday, March 6 would have been his son, Gregory’s 36th birthday. He passed from COVID on July 4, 2021, one of nearly 18,000 Oklahoma deaths attributed to the virus since it first was detected in the state in 2020.

Changes for vets to be discussed at free breakfast

El Reno VFW Post 382 and Auxiliary will host a free breakfast for all veterans and their families.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 4 at the VFW.

VFW State Service Officer James Dockemeyer will be the speaker. The purpose of the breakfast is to get new changes explained to veterans and their families.

Some of these changes veterans may not be aware of yet, said Nancy Salsman.

Traffic stop leads to stash of cash, drugs

El Reno police were told to be on the lookout for a white vehicle driven by a white female with a black male passenger after the pair had allegedly robbed a convenince store west of El Reno.

The hold-up, police said, took place at mile marker 108 on I-40 at about 11:35 p.m. Feb. 19.

What police didn’t know until an officer spotted it was that the vehicle was traveling the wrong way along the I-40 loop just west of the Federal Correctional Institution.

Murder case against ER man in limbo

A 27-year-old El Reno man remains in the Canadian County Jail while a first-degree murder case filed against him is in limbo, pending a March 20 hearing.

Kyler Wayne Barber is accused in the fatal stabbing of Adam Lee Frogge, 35, of Oklahoma City.

He faces a single count of first-degree murder with deliberate intent and is being held without bail.

El Reno grad serves aboard Navy warship

SAN DIEGO - Petty Officer 2nd Class Cameron Wahweah, a native of El Reno, serves aboard the U.S. Navy warship, USS Boxer, home-ported in San Diego, Calif.

Wahweah, a 2018 El Reno High School graduate, joined the Navy two years ago. “I joined the Navy to travel,” said Wahweah.

“Eventually, I want to go back to school, and the Navy will help pay for my education.” Skills and values learned in the Navy are similar to those found in El Reno.

McBride, Baker urge state superintendent to hire CFO

OKLAHOMA CITY – Reps. Mark McBride, R-Moore, and Rhonda Baker, R-Yukon, called on State Superintendent Ryan Walters to hire a chief financial officer for the Oklahoma State Department of Education immediately to take care of the needs of state public school students.

“With federal grant application deadlines looming, Oklahoma school superintendents are worried about having these critical dollars to continue to serve the needs of their students,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement.

Career teachers are scant in the Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame

When reviewing the more than 100 individuals inducted into the Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame since 1985, Ruth Genevieve Hudson stands out — because Hudson, inducted in 1994, is one of the very few career classroom teachers to make the cut.

While Hudson spent 45 years primarily teaching music at Sand Springs, Tulsa and Blackwell Public Schools, as well as in the state of Kansas, her lengthy classroom service is in stark contrast to many of the other people honored in the educators hall.
