Two arrested in meth bust

El Reno police arrested a man and woman after allegedly finding more than a half pound of methamphetamine in their vehicle. 

Assistant Police Chief Kirk Dickerson said the arrest came Nov. 5 at 6:47 p.m., after officers pulled over a westbound vehicle on Interstate 40.

The gray Ford Mustang was stopped near mile marker 127. The vehicle was pulled over after the driver allegedly “failed to maintain” its lane and failure to signal a lane change properly.

John Clarence Thorin, 93, died Oct. 12, 2024, at St. Katharine Drexel Retirement Center in El Reno. John was born March 29, 1931, to Clarence and Marie (Christon) Thorin in Boone County, Neb. He graduated as valedictorian from Neligh High School, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Nebraska and received a doctoral degree in music education from Indiana University.

Bobbie (Gentry) Thorin

Robert “Bobbie” Montell Thorin, 90, died Jan. 31, 2024, at St. Katharine Drexel Retirement Center. Bobbie was born Jan. 3, 1934, to Lois and C.A. Gentry in Roff, Okla. She graduated from Byng High School as salutatorian.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a Master’s in Counseling at East Central State University in Ada.

Friends of Carnegie Library show off new home at local church

The Friends of the Carnegie Library hosted an open house last week to welcome people to their new space.

The new location is in the basement of First Presbyterian Church, 221 N. Barker.

Refreshments were served, questions were answered and a tour was given. The Friends would like to thank those who attended and invite all to their next book sale.

Services for Robert Ray Thompson were held Saturday, Nov. 16 at Huber-Benson Funeral Home with Rev. Alice Wendling officiating.

Bobby died Nov. 12, 2024, at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born Oct. 6, 1962, in Riverside, Calif. He worked in construction and enjoyed riding motorcycles.

Jimmie Kathryn Shoemaker-Meyer

Jimmie Kathryn Shoemaker-Meyer, 103, of Hays, Kan., passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, at Redbud Village in Plainville.

She was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Piedmont to John Dallas and Cora Lillian (Russell) Harrison. She grew up in El Reno, graduating from El Reno High School in 1939.

Union City defense sparks win, Calumet, Okarche suffer losses

UNION CITY – A quick burst of points late in the second period, sparked by its defense, allowed Union City High School’s girls basketball team to stay undefeated on the young season.

The Tigers moved to 3-0 on the year with a 49-22 victory over Binger-Oney.

The win pushed Union City to 2-0 in the Washita Valley Conference standings.

Both teams struggled to score early as Binger-Oney led 5-2 before Union City got two free throws by Breanna Goad and a Kamryn Cook basket to lead 6-5. The Bobcats got a late basket to take a 7-6 lead into the second period.
