Gun safety bill passes committee

OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Nick Archer, R-Elk City, passed a bill out of the Appropriations and Budget Committee that would encourage responsible gun ownership.

Starting from tax year 2025, House Bill 3427 proposes to provide a tax credit equal to 50 percent of the purchase price of a gun safe or other qualified lockable storage device, up to a maximum of $1,000.

June Ninman

June Margaret (Boevers) Ninman was born to Lawrence and Olga (Kolar) Boevers on June 29, 1930, in the Rock Island community near Union City.

June was a lifelong resident of the Union City community. She attended numerous country elementary schools and Union City High School.

She worked on the family dairy farm while raising her children, and later worked and retired from Parkview Hospital.

June enjoyed sewing and attending her children and grandchildren’s events as well as visiting with her friends at the Dairy Mart.

Davis writes new chapter in ER history

OKLAHOMA CITY – A year after becoming El Reno High School’s first female wrestler to win a state championship, Kaylee Davis added another milestone to her record-setting career in an EHS singlet.

The senior pinned Bixby’s Jayla Ford in 1:31 to win the Class 6A 145-pound title at the 2024 Oklahoma State High School Wrestling Championships. By doing so she becomes the first El Reno female to win back-to-back titles.

This is the first year for girls to have two classifications at state, with Davis winning the 145-pound title last season.

Davidson falls short in finals against rival

OKLAHOMA CITY – While it was not the desired color, putting any medal around your neck at the state’s premiere high school wrestling event is an honor within itself.

El Reno senior Hunter Davidson became the school’s 73rd state placer after taking the Class 5A 157-pound silver medal at the 113th Annual Oklahoma State High School Wrestling Championships.

“It’s an awesome honor and Hunter had a good state tournament. He fell a little short in the finals but I’m still really proud of him,” said El Reno head coach Anthony McDonald.

Calumet streak hits 30 in state quarterfinals

OKLAHOMA CITY – Four 3-point baskets in the first period helped extend a record-setting season for Calumet High School’s boys basketball team at least one more game.

The top-ranked Chieftains defeated No.10 Varnum 75-55 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Class B Boys Oklahoma State High School Basketball Championships inside the State Fair Arena.

Calumet improved to 30-0 on the season to tie the school record for the most wins in a single season.

The previous mark was set in 2019 at 30-2 by another Jacob Mayfield coached team which reached the Class B title game.

El Reno roster a mix of youth, talented veterans

Throughout a handful of preseason scrimmages, El Reno High School’s baseball team has been using gains made by veteran players from last spring and summer and blending it with new players making the jump to varsity action.

El Reno was slated to open the 2024 spring season Friday at Capitol Hill before traveling to Kingfisher on Saturday. The Indians first home game is Monday against Shawnee in the District 5A-1 opener.

Okarche girls exit playoffs in area consolation semis

Okarche High School’s girls basketball team fell two wins shy of earning a repeat trip to the state tourney, losing 50-43 to No.11 Garber in the Class A, Area I consolation semifinals.

The Warriors went into the area round needing three wins to make state and took the first step with a 51-46 decision over No.15 Texhoma. The loss to Garber, however, ended Okarche’s season with a 20-11 record.

Cougars slowed by losing skid

Unable to break free of its losing streak, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team slipped a spot in the latest NJCAA Region 2 standings after back-to-back road losses.

The Cougars fell to Seminole State College (86-80) and Murray State College (89-65) to extend Redlands losing streak to seven straight.

The losses dropped RCC to 2-11 in league play and into the eighth spot in the standings.
