Parking lot resurfacing project hits a pothole

Body

Resurfacing the Canadian County Assessor’s Office parking lot has hit a snag, which may delay completion of the long-awaited project for a few months.

County commissioners last October hired Atlas Paving Co. to install a new asphalt surface for the parking lot replacement project on North Choctaw/Highway 81. Atlas will be paid $201,997 after submitting the lowest of seven bids.

Lawsuit brought by former employees against sheriff dismissed

Body

A lawsuit against Canadian County Sheriff Chris West has been dismissed and a jury trial stricken from the court docket.

Former sheriff’s investigator Marty Burns and Deputy Chelsea Adkins claimed in the civil suit they were wrongfully terminated after making whistleblower allegations.

Plaintiffs attorney Jonathan Irwin on Jan. 2 dismissed the lawsuit against West and the case was closed in Canadian County District Court.

SWOSU association to host C&A Tribes program

The Indigenous Student Association (ISA) at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) will host the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes Tradition Not Addiction program.

Christian Wassana, founder of the motivational movement, “I Am, I Can, I Will,” is the guest speaker for this event, as he has worked closely with youth and young adults about drug and alcohol prevention, culture, mental health and suicide prevention.

SWOSU ISA invites the SWOSU community and the public to attend this free event at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22 in the East Ballroom of the Memorial Student Center.

George Decker Sr.

George E. Decker Sr. passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at the home he shared with his grandson and wife and great-granddaughter.

He was born Dec. 6, 1925, in El Reno to Sarah (Flint) and George Decker.

George was a graduate of El Reno High School and lifetime resident.

He served with the U.S. Navy on the USS Enterprise in the Battle of Midway.

He married Doris Lee Allen in 1945. They were happily married until her death in December 2001.

Fresh Anointing hosting Paint Party Feb. 10

Fresh Anointing Church will be hosting a Paint Party on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. The instructor will be Canadian County Court Clerk Marie Hirst.

Cost is $35 which covers the cost of all supplies. To reserve a spot, call the church at 405-986-3331.

Lamplighters OHCE gather at local church

Lamplighters OHCE of Canadian County met recently at Mount Zion Global Methodist Church. Carol Stine called the meeting to order, with Jan Maddox offering a devotional titled “Trust.”

Janice Taylor was birthday honoree.

Maxine Little read minutes from the last meeting, while Patricia Morrison gave the treasurer’s report.

Taylor installed officers for the coming year, using a program called “Sweet Time.”

It was noted the passing of Charleece McBee. She had been a member of OHCE for 45 years. A memorial was sent to Highland Baptist in her honor.
