Gala to support victims of human trafficking

The Dragonfly Home will host its Eighth Annual Crown of Beauty Gala in support of its services for victims of human trafficking on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Embassy Suites in downtown Oklahoma City.   

“Oklahomans are realizing more and more that human trafficking is very real and it’s happening here, and they want to make a difference,” said Whitney Anderson, executive director of The Dragonfly Home.

Missed opportunities has put El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team behind the eight-ball in the district standings as the Indians losing streak hit three games last week.

El Reno dropped home games to Noble (2-1) and Carl Albert (14-4) to slip to 4-4 on the season. The loss, both in a 24-hour period, left the Indians in fourth place in the District 5A-2 standings with a 1-3 mark.

In the setback to the Bears, El Reno trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh before Justine Johnson singled.

Carolyn Marie Leck of El Reno entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Aug. 10, 2023, while surrounded by her family. Carolyn was born in Okarche on Feb. 8, 1956, to John and Rose Bleigh.

She loved her family and her friends fiercely. She was a devoted mother to her sons, Mike Samples and Jarrod Samples, and a loving wife to Shelton Bryan Jr.

Carolyn loved to spend time in her garden and found her favorite waterfall in Ouray, Colo.

Carolyn was a force to be reckoned with, firm but fair.

She believed in second chances, love and forgiveness.

Mary Ann Wiewel

Mary Ann Wiewel, 81, passed away peacefully Aug. 17, 2023, with family by her side. She was born Feb. 13, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas, the oldest of six children to U.S. Army Major Buford Arms and Mary Kathern Peeper. She was raised in Okarche and graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic School where she loved playing basketball and cheerleading with her biggest cheerleader in life and sister, Susie. The Arms girls dominated the court and were crowned as basketball queen their senior years.

EHS splits matches in home tournament

In the first home action of the season, El Reno High School’s volleyball team fell to Santa Fe South in the medal round play at the 2023 EHS Invitational to close the event with a 2-2 record.

El Reno defeated Seminole (25-13/25-19) and avenged a season-opening loss to Tecumseh (26-24/26-24) in pool play, but dropped a three-set match to Guymon (25-15/20-25/6-15).

In the medal-round match, the St. Bernards won by scores of 25-14/25-22. The 2-2 tourney effort left El Reno with a 2-3 overall record.

Birth - Dawson Gene Hutchings

BOY - Melanie Thompson and Dustin Hutchings of El Reno are parents of a boy, Dawson Gene Hutchings, born July 30 at Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City.

He weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

Dawson has three siblings, Camron, Holly and Mackenzie Hutchings.

Maternal grandparents are Robert and Susan Thompson of Azle, Texas. Great-grandmother is Margaret Evans of El Reno.

Paternal grandparents are David and Yuvonne Hutchings of Oklahoma City. Great-grandmother is Carol Meadows of El Reno.

Converting hits to runs a struggle

Union City and Calumet High School’s fast-pitch softball teams have been struggling of late to convert hits into runs, which has forced both schools to take hits in the win-loss columns.

Union City has posted a 2-3 record over the past five games to slip to 3-8 on the season. The Tigers hit 36-of-97 (.371) over the stretch and scored 29 runs, 20 of those in wins over Ninnekah (15-3) and Casady (5-3).

The losses were to Fletcher (14-8), Heritage Hall (13-0) and Cashion (10-1).

Allen Chase Woods, 28, passed away Aug. 16, 2023, in Greenville, S.C.

He was born Aug. 25, 1994, in Oklahoma City to Yolanda and Paul Woods. He attended El Reno schools. Chase recently moved out to Honea Path, S.C., for employment.

Chase enjoyed the simple things. He loved spending time with his family, hanging out with his friend, Tyler Mahoney, cooking, especially whenever he got to use his favorite grill, playing video games, and his cat, Mei.
