County plans to use COWIB work program

Canadian County government leaders plan to utilize services provided by a nonprofit entity to find and train skilled, productive workers.

Commissioners discussed an agreement with the Central Oklahoma Workforce Innovation Board (COWIB) to participate in a Work Experience (WEX) program.

“They will help us to find employees who will come here to gain experience,” District 3 Commissioner Tracey Rider said.

“If it turns out that they are a good fit, we’ll be able to employ them.

Fort Reno Visitors Center, museum getting beautified through DAR chapter’s 250 Project

Members of the Fort Reno DAR chapter have been working to beautify the Historic Fort Reno Visitors Center and Museum.

This effort is for their “250 Project” to commemorate our nation’s 250th birthday.

This was the DAR’s second working event at the museum, done on a quarterly basis.

The Fort Reno DAR’s support for the Visitors Center and Museum has been greatly appreciated, said museum officials.

Come-and-go viewing for Jason Boyd Marquardt of El Reno will be held from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at Wilson Funeral Home, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17 at Trinity Baptist Church.

Jason went to be with the Lord on May 12, 2023. He was born July 7, 1940, in El Reno to Gus and Anna Marquardt. Jason was raised in El Reno and graduated from El Reno High School in 1958.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of William “Bill” Loyd Adams, who left this earth on May 10, 2023, at 85 years old.

Born as a New Year’s baby on Jan. 1, 1938, in El Reno, Bill grew up in the “alphabet town” section of Fair Addition.

He was a natural athlete and played quarterback on the El Reno High School football team, proudly wearing the number 17 on his jersey.\

Calumet, El Reno players earn spots on WOBCA All-Star rosters

Both Calumet and El Reno high schools will be sending players to Wednesday’s Western Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Star Games to be played in Weatherford.

Calumet’s Caleb Meschberger will play in the Small School Game, which starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by Ty Vincent in the Large School Game to follow.

It’s the second year in a row for El Reno to have a player selected for the event.

Both players played similar roles for their squads during the recent spring season, each starting in the outfield but seeing time in the field or on the mound.

Graveside services for Jason Wyatt Barger of El Reno will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at the El Reno Cemetery with Deacon Lloyd Menz officiating.

Services are under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Jason died May 11, 2023, at St. Anthony Healthplex in El Reno. He was born Aug. 10, 1998, in El Reno. He graduated from El Reno High School and was a tree trimmer employed by Kendall Vegetation.

Jason is survived by his parents, Jimmy and Lizette Barger, and siblings, Joshua Phillips, Ashley Phillips and Sara Barger, all of El Reno.

Redlands bumped to seventh at nationals

A mad dash to the finish had several teams, including Redlands Community College, make up strokes on the leaders at the 2023 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf Championships.

However, in the end it was the Cougars who got bumped out of sixth place, a position RCC had maintained over the middle rounds of the 72-hole event held at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kan.

Redlands started the final round in sixth place and trailed Texas-based McLennan Community College by six strokes. The Cougars made up four of those shots with a final round of 315.

It’s a big dill

El Reno showed – for the 35th time – why it owns the onion burger, simply, the community serves the best and biggest in Oklahoma, or anywhere else for that matter.

Shana Ford, with El Reno’s Main Street Inc., estimated 27,000 people came out May 6 for the annual Burger Day Festival.
