Millers celebrate 50th anniversary

Larry and Kathy Miller are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married Aug. 6, 1971, at Red Rock United Methodist Church.

Larry is the son of the late Homer and Gladys Eaton Miller, and Kathy is the daughter of the late Dale and Ellen Fread Funck.

The couple lives south of Calumet and has farmed together for the past 50 years. They are semi-retired but stay active on their farm.

They are members of Red Rock United Methodist Church and enjoy spending time with their family.

Couple exchange marriage vows in scenic Lake Eufaula ceremony

Jessica Cowan and Landon Davis exchanged marriage vows during a scenic lake-view wedding held July 10 in the Deep Fork Amphitheater at Lake Eufaula.

Brian Lewis, brother of the groom, officiated the ceremony. Gordon (Bud) Hoselton, brother of the bride, stood in for their father in giving the bride away.

The couple was joined by their children, Hunter, Colton and Cooper Holcomb and Haley Davis.

County fair draws closer; exhibit entry dates posted

County residents can show off their talents during the 67th Annual Canadian County Free Fair, set for Aug. 23-28 at the new Expo and Event Center at 3001 Jensen Road, fair officials report.

A new change of entry date has been made, with entries received only on Monday, Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. or from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Judging will be on Tuesday, Aug. 24, and the Expo Center will be open for the public to view exhibits at 5 p.m.

Underwood OHCE conducts meeting

The Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education Association of Canadian County met recently at a local restaurant with Bernita Davis as hostess. Natalia Valenzuela called the meeting to order.

Davis read minutes of the previous meeting, with Ann Ricketts giving the treasury report.

It was noted that volunteer training for those working at the upcoming county fair will be held Aug. 17, with a tour of the new fair complex to follow. Members discussed plans for items to be entered, and will meet Aug. 23 to set up the group and educational booths.

Spikers pick up extra workouts

Last year’s changes to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association’s manual for volleyball is giving El Reno High School’s program a slight break from chaotic pressures of preseason workouts.

El Reno started a week later from the OSSAA’s designated start date due to a switch in the overall length of the season.

“They added a week to the season last year and the way our school calendar falls, it adds in a few more days.

It’s Miller Time, bud

Matt Miller is having the best season of his drag boat racing career and now the El Reno driver can add two more titles to his bounty – both on his home course.

“This is my best season so far and I’m happy with the changes I’ve made,” said Miller.

Miller brought a new boat to the 2021 Smoke on the Water Drag Boat Races, a Cheyenne tunnel design built by Ervin Capps. With a huge cheering section behind him, Miller drove the bright orange craft to finals victories over friend and longtime rival Wade Kokendoffer of Choctaw.

Benny Dale Foreman

Body

Funeral services for Benny Dale Foreman were held Friday, July 30, 2021, in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in the El Reno Cemetery.

Benny passed away July 25, 2021, in Oklahoma City. He was born July 31, 1935, in Hydro to Fred and Beulah Foreman and was their fourth child. Benny served in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in September of 1957. He then went to work for the Rock Island Railroad and later with the El Reno Reformatory until his retirement in 1985.

John A. Bullen, M.D.

Body

Graveside services for John A. Bullen, M.D., were held Thursday, July 29, 2021, in the El Reno Cemetery with Allen Carson of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Services were under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home.

Dr. Bullen died July 25, 2021, at his home in Oklahoma City. He was born June 12, 1946, in Dallas, Texas. He lived in Geary before moving to El Reno in 1958.

As a child he raised and showed sheep, and loved playing sports including basketball, football, baseball, softball and track.

Winfred Loy Garrett

Body

Winfred Loy Garrett died July 26, 2021, at his home in Yukon. He was born March 3, 1943, in Minco to Wesley and Lorene (Eason) Garrett.

He was raised in Cogar and El Reno and in 1960 enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge he worked at Aero Commander and then moved to Washington to work at the Tacoma Boat Company and later at Boeing in Seattle where was an electrician flight tester. He lived in Gig Harbor, Wash., for 22 years with his wife, Sharon.
