Program assists Oklahomans seeking to transition out of nursing homes

Do you have a loved one in a nursing facility that needs assistance transitioning back into the community?

The Oklahoma Living Choice Program may be what you are looking for. The Oklahoma Living Choice Program assists Oklahomans wanting to transition out of a nursing home and back into the community in a residence of their own.

The populations served are individuals 65 and over, and individuals 19 and up with a physical disability.

El Reno High School seniors Kolton Hunt, Raelyn Kouba and Dorian Plumley recently signed national letters of intent to play college sports.

Hunt signed to play football at Northeastern State University, while Kouba will play softball at Northern Oklahoma College in Enid. Plumley signed to play football at the University of Oklahoma.

While it won’t be following the traditional East/West split, El Reno High School will host two home games for the upcoming Class 5A playoffs.

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association released playoff brackets for the three largest classifications last week, with El Reno being named one of eight regional host sites for the girls – but on the East side of the 5A bracket.

“I was given the option to go East and I said yes,” said El Reno head coach Jennifer Douglas.

Mark Ciardi has fond memories of watching famed quarterback Kurt Warner guide the St. Louis Rams to a thrilling seven-point win over the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl 34.

“I’ve done a lot of iconic sports stories but this is one I can remember unfolding while watching it on television. I always said that this would make a great movie someday,” said Ciardi.

Two decades later, the movie producer behind such hits as The Rookie, Miracle, Secretariat and Million Dollar Arm is putting his talents behind that statement.

Council approves new senior living project

A new residential community for people 55 and over is expected to be built on East Elm after the El Reno City Council threw its support to the project.

Gary Owens Development out of Mustang plans to build a 200-unit independent and market rate senior living community on a 33-acre site on the south side of East Elm, just west of the city cemetery.

The project will be similar to one in Mustang where Owens built a 125-unit development. Representatives for Owens told the council that development is filled with a waiting list.

El Reno Mayor Matt White presents Melodee Worthen with an Oklahoma Municipal League certificate recognizing her for 25 years of service to the city of El Reno.

Worthen is credited with helping transition the police department in numerous technology upgrades over the years.

The presentation was made at the beginning of last week’s city council meeting.

Senate advances measure to deal with shortage of in-home caregivers

OKLAHOMA CITY – The full Senate unanimously approved a measure on Monday that would allow personal care aides to perform a wider scope of in-home health-care services under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Senate Bill 42, authored by Sen. Dave Rader, R-Tulsa, would allow personal care aides to provide additional hourly care, like assisting patients with showering and dressing.

Currently, only full-time, 24-hour-care home health aides are able to provide these services.

Deadline nears for voters to register for absentee ballots

Just a little time remains for registered voters in Canadian County to apply for absentee ballots to be mailed to them for the March 2 Calumet School Special Bond Election and the City of Yukon ONG Special Election, according to Canadian County Election Board Secretary Wanda Armold.

Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the county election board no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23 to be processed in time for the election.
