Domestic Violence Awareness Month recognized by county

Canadian County commissioners issued a proclamation last week recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Carolyn Husmann, associate director of the Intervention Crisis Advocacy Network (ICAN), said Oklahoma ranks third highest in the nation for intimate partner violence.

Statistics show intimate partner violence accounts for 15 percent of all violent crime. A victim of domestic violence will attempt to leave the abuser an average of “seven to nine times” before they actually break free.

C&A Tribes launch new construction company

CONCHO - The Cheyenne and Arapaho Business Development Corporation has launched Hammerstone Construction Group, its newest subsidiary company.

The company will be based in Concho and will provide general contracting, construction management, excavation, trenching, civil and site work services, site clearing and other commercial construction services.

“We will bring high-quality construction services and craftsmanship to a number of essential projects in local communities and across the region,” said Kyle Spotted Horse, president of Hammerstone Construction.

Ghost Tours come to town

The Centre Theatre will be the site for a series of Ghost Tours through October.

A group billed as Investigating Oklahoma’s Paranormal, or IOKP, will host the tours that started Oct. 9. The tours are set for Oct. 10, 16, 30 and 31, with two sessions each evening except on Oct. 30 when one tour at 10:30 p.m. will be offered.

The other dates will see tours of the building at 8:30 p.m., with a second tour set for 10:30 p.m.

Aliki Patricia Dyer and Todd Eric Joshua were united in marriage June 6 in a garden ceremony at the home of Kelly and Chris Fry in Jones with Trevor Bomhoff officiating.

The outside venue was decorated with white begonias and blue hydrangeas.

The bride is the daughter of Ray Dyer and Viviane Dyer and granddaughter of Pat Dyer and the late Jack Dyer and the late Manos and Aliki Rovithis.

Phantom Fundraiser to help RCC Foundation scholarships

Redlands Community College Foundation is able to provide thousands of dollars in scholarship support each year to students who may not be able to afford college.

Much of this support is created through the foundation’s annual fundraiser.

This year the foundation is departing from its popular Dollars for Scholars event to hold a Phantom Fundraiser.

“Through the generosity of donors over the past few years, we have been able to increase scholarship opportunities for Redlands students,” said Brooke Robertson, president of the foundation.

Lowder to speak Oct. 18 at Fresh Anointing Church

Fresh Anointing Church, 1300 W. Watts, will have a guest speaker on Sunday, Oct. 18 as Rev. Terry Lowder offers words of faith and hope. Rev. Lowder is assistant superintendent of the IPHC Heartland Conference.

The church is practicing social distance seating and there will be special seating for those who wear a mask to feel more comfortable.

On Saturday, Oct. 31, Trunk-or-Treat for kids will be held beginning at 5 p.m. until the candy, which will already be bagged, runs out. Trunks will be decorated and there will be lots of fun in the parking lot.
