With every shot that Carter Roman Nose took in last week’s game with Carl Albert, there were collective gasps rolling out of the mouths of El Reno fans along with the occasional, “There it is.”

And with every shot by the senior that ripped the threads, there were pencils and pens in the hands of the EHS coaches and this journalist jotting down notes and doing quick math.

Yet somehow through all that chaotic madness, Roman Nose never picked up on the fact he was on the brink of making El Reno High School history.

MIDWEST CITY – Carl Albert used a 9-0 run in the final three minutes of the third period to pull away from El Reno High School’s girls basketball team for a 54-38 victory and dethroned the Indians as the District 5A-1 champion.

The Titans (24-1) swept the series from El Reno en route to a 14-0 run to the league title.

The Indians, coming off a 71-14 win over Santa Fe South, slipped to 19-3 overall and 12-2 in the league to finish second. 

Both teams will host a regional in the upcoming 5A playoffs.

MIDWEST CITY – A questionable string of events over the final 10 seconds allowed Carl Albert to hand El Reno High School’s boys basketball team a 61-54 loss in the final District 5A-1 game for both squads.

The loss dropped El Reno to 21-2 on the season but the Indians still won the league title with a 13-1 record after the split with the Titans. The Indians won the first meeting by five points.

Despite the loss, El Reno retains the top seed from 5A-1 as the champion and will host a regional next week. The Indians were slated to wrap up the regular season at Mustang.

TULSA – Logging only three wins, El Reno High School’s first trip to the Class 5A Dual State Championship since 2021 ended with a 58-14 quarterfinals loss to second-ranked Claremore.

With the setback to the Zebras, El Reno, ranked 12th in the state, closes its dual season with a 6-4 overall record.

El Reno got off to a fast start as Coleman Iker (190) ran out to a 3-1 lead after one period. He then caught Xavier Duncan in a second-period cradle and scored a fall (3:00) for a 6-0 lead.

For a third straight season, El Reno High School will have multiple entries at the 2025 Oklahoma Girls State High School Wrestling Championships.

Competing in the Class 6A West Regional Championships in Shawnee, freshman Remy Whitney and senior Brooklynn Huggins punched state tickets while helping El Reno to a 16th-place team finish with 51 points.

Whitney (100) was runner-up after losing a 6-0 decision to Westmoore’s Kyrain Perez for the gold. She posted a 3-1 record after falls over Lawton’s Makayla Minte (:51) and Western Heights’ Abigayle Spotler (:40).

Logan White scored a season-high 21 points to lead Okarche High School’s girls basketball team to the Class A, Area I, District 4 Championship with a 50-38 decision over Cherokee.

The Warriors, ranked 20th in the state, improved to 18-8 on the season.

Okarche moves into the double-elimination Region A winners bracket against Garber needing three straight wins to make a third straight trip to state.

Scoring 20 or more points in all four periods, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team took the first step toward its third straight trip to the Class B state tourney with a 97-55 win over Covington-Douglas.

The Chieftains third straight win came in the Area I, District 1 Championships, which moved Calumet to 22-3 on the season. The top-ranked team in the state moves to the Region A winners bracket to face Lomega.

Winning four of its last five outings, including two in a row, has vaulted the Redlands Community College women’s basketball team up two spots in the conference standings.

The Cougars defeated Eastern Oklahoma State College (58-38) and Western Oklahoma State College (64-58) to improve to 13-9 on the season.

Redlands moved up two spots in the NJCAA Region 2 standings to fourth with a 6-5 record.

Splitting a pair of conference games has left the Redlands Community College men’s basketball team alone in fifth place in the NJCAA Region 2 standings.

The Cougars defeated Eastern Oklahoma State College (67-61) at home before losing a road game at Western Oklahoma State College (76-72). The split left the Cougars with an 18-7 overall record and a 6-5 Region 2 mark.

Savon Myers led all Redlands scorers with 25 points, 11 assists, four rebounds and two steals. Glenn Bishop Jr. was close behind with 24 points, five boards and two steals.

Fred Slaughter has spent hundreds if not thousands of hours walking the basketball court inside Jenks Simmons Field House as either an assistant coach or fulfilling his duties as assistant athletic director.
