Juliana Thomas came up with a steal in the waning seconds to preserve a two-point victory as El Reno High School’s girls basketball team jumped back into the district win column.

El Reno moves to 2-1 on the season with a 43-41 road win over Noble. The Indians hold the same record in the District 5A-2 standings and move up to third behind Carl Albert and Midwest City – both at 2-0.

Thomasv steal came near mid-court and resulted in a jump ball whistle as time expired. El Reno led 43-39 and fought off four 3-point shots by Noble in the final two minutes.

A third straight double-digit loss has dropped El Reno High School’s boys basketball team to the cellar of the 5A-2 standings for the first time since large schools switched to district format.

El Reno suffered a 62-40 setback to Noble to slip to 0-3 on the year. It’s the first time in more than a decade for the Indians to start a season with three straight losses.

Rodney Haydon’s team is tied with Guthrie, Guymon and Southeast for fifth in the standings but slides to eighth on the tiebreaker points.

Haydon Mayfield put up team-high efforts in points, rebounds, assists and steals as Calumet High School’s girls basketball team won its third straight game with a 76-30 rout of Hinton.

Calumet, ranked No.7 in the latest Class B-I poll, moves to 5-1 on the season with the 46-point win.

Mayfield logged 36 points off 46 percent shooting including a trio of 3-point baskets off a 33-percent effort. She had a double-double with 13 rebounds, eight assists and eight steals.

Gavin Righter scored seven 2-point baskets en route to a team-high 14 points as Union City High School’s boys basketball team won its third game.

The Tigers 71-27 blowout of Cordell moves unranked Union City to 4-3 on the season.

Max Norton knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to highlight his nine points, while Kaden Stewart had a trey and nine points total. Braxton Sickler netted two treys and eight points.

The Tigers had 12 players score in the 54-point blowout.

Calumet 95, Hinton 49

Suffering its first loss in the month of December since 2022, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team was held to 13 made baskets in a 52-36 setback to Midwest City.

The loss dropped El Reno to 1-1 on the season and in District 5A-2 standings, tied for fourth place with Lawton.

El Reno led the contest four times in the first half, the largest being 10-7 on two free throws by Eryn Roman Nose with 1:36 left in the first period. The Indians led 12-11 in the second period on a basket by Layni Wright but would give up 15 straight points to the Bombers.

Thirty-one turnovers, with 11 coming in the second period, proved to be the thorn in the side of El Reno High School’s boys basketball team in a 71-45 loss to Midwest City in its home opener.

The 26-point loss, the second 20-plus-point setback for the Indians, dropped El Reno to 0-2 on the season and 0-2 in District 5A-2 standings.

It’s the first 0-2 start for El Reno since 2013 and the 21st loss by 20 points or more over that 12-year period.

Redlands Community College women’s basketball team held off a second-half charge by Crowder College to extend its current win streak to 11 straight games with a 69-61 victory. The team moves to 11-1 on the season.

Redlands led 40-25 at the half but was outscored 36-29 over the final two periods. The Cougars shot 21-of-52 from the floor (40 percent), including six 3-pointers off 38 percent shooting.

Three players closed in double-digit scoring, led by 15 points, four rebounds and a steal from Myracle Washington.

Snapping a two-game losing streak, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team moved to an even .500 for the season with back-to-back double-digit wins.

The Cougars are now 6-6 overall after beating Strength-and-Motion (100-48) and Clarendon College (90-78).

Justice Johnson had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 52-point home blowout. He had a team-high 48 points and 16 rebounds for the two-game set.

A young El Reno High School wrestling team, which started four freshmen, kicked off the 2025-26 dual season last week by rallying from 10 points down to defeat Watonga.

El Reno posted a 58-21 victory by winning seven of the eight weights settled on the mat.

Both teams forfeited four weights with the Indians getting free wins from Zackary Pannell (165), Whylee Towns-Marquez (190), Turner Richardson (215) and Nick Mitchum at heavyweight.

Fast starts have been a key element to the success of El Reno High Schools girls basketball program under head coach Jennifer Douglas.

Last week the Indians, the two-time defending Class 5A state champions, kicked off the 2025-26 season with a 47-33 road win over the Lawton Wolverines.

It’s the eighth time in 10 years with Douglas at the helm for El Reno to win its season opener and the seventh in a row.

The only losses were to Piedmont (51-49) in 2016, Douglas’ first year, and to the Wildcats two years later by 16 points.
