El Reno High School’s wrestling team closed out the 2022 portion of its schedule with another brutally tough event, this time heading out of state for the Kansas City Stampede.

The event is billed as one of the top 10 tournaments in the nation and featured 69 schools from 13 different states. El Reno, ranked first in Class 5A, placed 18th overall with 87 points and was one of six Oklahoma schools entered.

The inside-outside combination of Emma Stover and Jalie Rother vaulted Okarche High School’s girls basketball team into the short Christmas break on a five-game win streak.

The Warriors defeated Watonga (79-45) and Oklahoma Bible Academy (71-52) to move to 6-2 on the season.

Okarche heads into the famed Tournament of Champions (Dec. 28-31) having logged six games with 70 or more points on offense.

Calumet High School’s boys basketball team charged into the holiday break riding an eight-game winning streak after defeating Corn Bible Academy 75-34.

The Chieftains, ranked seventh in Class B, improved to 10-1 on the season.

Calumet shot 40 percent from the field after making 27-of-59 (46 percent) shots from 2-point range. The squad hit 5-of-22 3-pointers for 23 percent.

Calumet led in transition points (25-0), paint points (54-16), assists (18-9) and steals (29-5), but was outrebounded 39-36.

With Piedmont scheming to shut down El Reno High School’s top two scorers in James Reveles and Carter Roman Nose, the Indians needed another player to step up and fill in the void in this top 10 battle.

Alex Elizondo was happy to oblige.

The point guard scored a team-high 16 points as El Reno defeated the seventh-ranked Wildcats 54-47. The Indians, ranked sixth in the same Class 5A poll, improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Suburban Conference standings.

Poor shooting hampers EHS girls in league setback 39-35

In what could be the final regular-season meeting in the cross-county rivalry between El Reno High School’s girls basketball team and Piedmont, the Wildcats snapped a four-game losing streak with a 39-35 victory.

El Reno, ranked fourth in Class 5A, dropped its second straight game to slip to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Suburban Conference standings.

Piedmont, ranked 11th in the same poll at 5-2, earned the win in its league opener.

For the first time in school history, El Reno High School’s wrestling team held a spotlight dual at Jenks Simmons Field House as the number one team in Class 5A. Unfortunately for the Indians, their opponent proved to be a rude guest.

Broken Arrow, ranked fourth in Class 6A, won 12 of the 14 weights en route to a 54-7 win over El Reno, which slips to 3-1 on the season.

The first rankings of the basketball season for upper classifications favored El Reno High School as both teams opened in the top 10 in Class 5A.

The El Reno boys grabbed the sixth spot in the 5A poll and took a 5-1 record into Friday’s home game with Piedmont. The Indians loss was by a point on a late 3-pointer to Choctaw, ranked sixth in Class 6A.

Chieftains foursome earn all-tourney honors, Okarche wins Garber title, UCHS third

Four Calumet High School boys basketball players earned honors from the 2022 Canton Invitational after the Chieftains steamrolled through the field to capture the championship for an eighth straight year.

It was the sixth straight Canton title for Calumet head coach Jacob Mayfield as his Chieftains, ranked fifth in Class B, defeated Fairview JV (88-13), Cherokee (91-27) and Lomega (71-47).

Earning all-tournament team honors were Kyler Thiessen, Dalton Belcher and Caleb Meschberger. Junior Hunter Arnold was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player.

Union City girls take third in Binger-Oney tourney, Calumet rallies for consolation title

Union City High School’s girls basketball team played two overtime games en route to a third-place finish in the recent 2022 Binger-Oney Invitational.

Post player Emily Griggs hit a buzzer-beater to send the Tigers into overtime of the semifinal game with Mt. View-Gotebo, but Union City went on to lose that game 52-48.

The loss dropped the Tigers into the third-place game against Ninnekah, which went into overtime. In the extra frame, Megan Goad made four free throws, followed by Lily Russell with three and two by Bree Goad to help fashion a 46-43 win.

Jackets sting El Reno title hopes at Panthers Classic

Choctaw used a 21-8 scoring edge in the second period to rally past El Reno High School’s girls basketball team for a 52-45 win in the title game of the 50th Annual Harrah Panthers Classic.

It was the first loss of the season for El Reno, which dropped to 5-1, after defeating Bishop McGuinness (56-28) and Star Spencer (81-31) to reach the championship game.

El Reno led the Yellowjackets 20-13 after one period, but was outscored 39-25 over the final three periods by the Class 6A school.
