Scoring runs remains issue for local teams

Run production continues to be an issue for both Union City and Calumet High School’s fast-pitch softball teams as both squads earned only one win in eight combined games last week.

Union City slipped to 3-11 on the season with its lone win over four games, a 15-3 decision against Ninnekah.

The Tigers dropped games to Elmore City/Pernell (8-1), Rush Springs (14-1) and Empire (11-1).

The team went 21-of-78 (.269) from the plate with two triples and a double from Morgan Brothers. Victoria Stucks, Lily Russell and Trestan Sutton logged a double each.

Calumet makes strong case for No. 1 ranking

Calumet High School continues to make its case to be the top-ranked team in Class B after winning the recent Okarche/Binger-Oney Tournament and sweeping both games of its own festival.

The Chieftains, now 13-0, moved up a spot in the latest poll to No.2 behind Fort Cobb-Broxton (13-3).

Calumet defeated Binger-Oney (19-0) and Class A’s 10th-ranked Okarche (1-0) in tournament play before taking the title with a 3-1 win over Class A’s fifth-ranked Amber-Pocasset.

Redlands drops matches to open 2023 campaign

Redlands Community College women’s soccer team has had a rocky start to the 2023 season with back-to-back losses including a 4-1 setback to Kansas-based Garden City in its home opener.

The Cougars are 0-1 in the NJCAA Region 2 standings after a 4-0 loss to Northern Oklahoma College of Enid.

Amya Lindsay had the lone goal for the Cougars out of five total shots through two matches.

Payton Brickey had three shots, followed by Miya Ingram with two. Jaidya Gonzalez and Bri Spann added a shot each.

CHICKASHA – While he was expecting a fast start on the 104th installment of the U.S. 81 Battle, El Reno High School head football coach Russell Cook admits he was impressed with what his team delivered.

Freshman Kaleb Blackwolf took the game’s opening kickoff back 47 yards and El Reno scored two plays later on a 28-yard run by senior Malachi Nicholson to kick-start a 64-24 win over Chickasha.

El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team snapped a three-game losing streak by winning a trio of games in the 2023 Shawnee Festival.

El Reno improved to 7-4 on the season by defeating Del City (12-1), Duncan (13-2) and McAlester (3-0). The win over the Eagles was the second of the season for EHS.

The Indians had the sticks working as the team went 26-of-73 (.356) from the plate with nine extra base hits. Jacy Little logged a double as did Maddie Moss, Micah Woods and Raley Hartley.

After winning the first game of the 2023 Suburban Conference opener at Carl Albert by a narrow 25-22 margin, El Reno High School’s volleyball team dropped three games to fall to the Titans, 3-1.

Carl Albert rallied behind scores of 25-11/27-25/25-12 to drop El Reno to 2-4 on the season.

The team logged 22 kills, led by Jewell Graham with five, followed by Qyra Jones and Trinity Black with four each. Kallie Maifield added three kills, while Emercyn Looper had two kills. Looper and Daily Maples led all setters with seven apiece, while Maifield had two.

Missed opportunities has put El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team behind the eight-ball in the district standings as the Indians losing streak hit three games last week.

El Reno dropped home games to Noble (2-1) and Carl Albert (14-4) to slip to 4-4 on the season. The loss, both in a 24-hour period, left the Indians in fourth place in the District 5A-2 standings with a 1-3 mark.

In the setback to the Bears, El Reno trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh before Justine Johnson singled.

EHS splits matches in home tournament

In the first home action of the season, El Reno High School’s volleyball team fell to Santa Fe South in the medal round play at the 2023 EHS Invitational to close the event with a 2-2 record.

El Reno defeated Seminole (25-13/25-19) and avenged a season-opening loss to Tecumseh (26-24/26-24) in pool play, but dropped a three-set match to Guymon (25-15/20-25/6-15).

In the medal-round match, the St. Bernards won by scores of 25-14/25-22. The 2-2 tourney effort left El Reno with a 2-3 overall record.
