Chickasha takes two from EHS

El Reno High School’s soccer teams dropped down a classification last week to face Chickasha as the two schools renewed the U.S. 81 Battle on the pitch.

The Fighting Chicks got the upper hand as the girls snapped El Reno’s two-match win streak with a 5-0 shutout.

The non-district loss dropped the Indians to 2-2 on the season.

The El Reno boys suffered their third straight loss, a 6-1 decision, to slip to 2-4 on the season.

The Indians goal was by Josh Gonzalez on his lone shot of the match.

Union City rallies past Pats; Calumet rebounds from loss

OKLAHOMA CITY - Union City High School’s baseball team warmed up from the frigid temperatures at Dolese Park and a 4-2 deficit to score 13 unanswered runs to defeat Southwest Covenant 15-4.

Seven of those runs came in the third inning as the Tigers improved to 9-1 on the season with their seventh straight win.

Union City went 6-of-16 (.375) from the plate and took advantage of eight walks in the rally. Carson Biffle led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort with a pair of doubles leading to three scores and three runs batted in. Brycen Bilyea added a double and two ribbies.

Peake claims medalist title, RCC team 13th in Arkansas

Battling cold weather and another field of four-year programs, Redlands Community College women’s golf team placed 13th last week at the 2024 Hardscrabble Invitational.

Played on the par-70 Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith, Ark., Redlands carded a 65-over, 345 team score for the 18-hole event. It was shorted from 36 holes to a one-day event due to weather.

El Reno lands two 5A-1 superlative awards

For a team that was considered to be in a rebuilding phase, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team turned out to be a force to be taken seriously during District 5A-1 play.

The Indians went 9-5 in league play for fourth place, but three of those five losses were against Class 5A state semifinalists Carl Albert and Crossings Christian.

Those five losses were by a combined 51 points, with three of those games being single-digit setbacks.

El Reno is off to a 7-2 start this spring, but had the week of spring break off.

Keith Hill’s team returns to action Monday at Guymon for a District 5A-1 doubleheader with the Tigers.

El Reno is 4-0 in league play and tied with Carl Albert, Noble and Guthrie for the lead.

Calumet takes over top spot; Union City strings together winning streak

Calumet High School’s baseball team is now the team to beat in Class B after the Chieftains took over the top spot in the second state rankings following a 3-0 start.

Cody Thiessen’s team remains unbeaten with a recent road win over Weatherford’s junior varsity (16-0), followed by an 8-2 win over Clinton in last week’s Calumet Festival.

Calumet went 23-of-52 (.442) from the plate for the two-game set, getting a double each from Carson Cooper, Brett Reed, Jackson Burns and Kaleb Thiessen.

Union City High School’s slow-pitch softball team split a road doubleheader with Alex last week as the Tigers are struggling to find consistency in the win column.

Chase Johnson’s team defeated Alex 16-12 but dropped a 3-2 decision. The split came on the heels of a 1-3 effort in the Highway 152 Classic as Union City defeated Lawton Eisenhower 11-0.

The Classic losses were to Hydro-Eakly (14-0), Lookeba-Sickles (8-2) and Amber-Pocasset (12-11). The 2-4 record over the past six games leaves Union City with a 5-6 record for the spring.

Redlands cagers make early exit from NJCAA Region 2 tournament

Redlands Community College’s basketball teams suffered first-round losses in the 2024 NJCAA Region 2 Championships held in Muskogee.

The Redlands men lost to top-seeded Connors State College 107-67 to end the season with an 11-20 overall record. The Cougars dropped 11 of their final 13 games.

Deazhon Perkins was one of two players to close in double digits for the Cougars, scoring 20 points off 9-of-20 shooting. He added eight assists, five rebounds and two steals.

El Reno dominates picks on District 5A-1 squads

There were many firsts logged into the record books during the El Reno High School girls basketball team’s historic run to the Class 5A state championship.

First-ever undefeated record for EHS girls basketball at 28-0.

First-ever state championship in girls basketball.

First-ever district championship.

Now you can add two more superlative honors to that list as head coach Jennifer Douglas was named the District 5A-1 Coach of the Year and senior post player Pauline Black-Harmon was tabbed as the league’s Player of the Year.
