During World War II, on April 9, 1942, 75,000 United States soldiers and Filipino soldiers were surrendered to Japanese forces after months of battling in extreme climate conditions.
Soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese forces began the invasion of the Philippines. The capture of the Philippines was crucial to the Japanese. It would bring them one step closer to the control of the Southwest Pacific.
I found it a bit ironic that Canadian County commissioners are involved in a discussion about the need for a county building inspector for unincorporated areas.
Last week some people told the commissioners the unincorporated areas of the county are experiencing a surge in new home construction.
They suggested there is a strong need for a county inspector to make sure buildings are put up correctly.
Cargo ships waiting to unload at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., could keep some of America’s store shelves bare for a while.
These two ports handle the bulk of cargo coming from China. Cargo keeps coming from China, making the congestion craziness only worse. The dozens of ships floating in the Pacific are carrying products that used to be some of America’s good-paying jobs.

On Oct. 7, 1948, a beautiful fall day, my mom, grandmother, our dog, Bootsie, and myself came up over the top of the north overpass from Herington, Kan., in a 1939 Plymouth loaded down and ready for a new life.
I thought El Reno was the most beautiful little town I had ever seen.
The homes were colorful and everything so neat, many of the homes are still there today.
One of the great myths of politics is that the policy stances of medical associations reflect the views of most doctors. But that claim is being dispelled more and more as medical associations continue to take political stances far afield from the mainstream of society.
For example, the American Medical Association (AMA) has debated removing sex from birth certificates, saying there is “no clear standard for defining sex designation” and that designating sex on birth certificates “as male or female suggests that sex is simple and binary.”
Two impressive events last week in El Reno.
The opening and dedication of the new Rock Island overpass was something that will serve motorists for years and gives El Reno a really nice entrance into the downtown core.
The ceremony was a very cool tribute to the community as well as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the contractors who built the $10 million structure.
While the inconveniences to the businesses along South Rock Island were easy to see during construction, the project was completed sooner than expected.

The photo on the front page of the El Reno Tribune on Sept. 25 was absolutely outstanding. The photo of the Fort Reno Cavalry Competition is truly the picture of the year.
Glen Miller did such a beautiful job of capturing the story of joy, excitement, pride and freedom found at the competition, not only with that photo, but with all the photos of the troopers in the 2021 Cavalry Competition.
Mr. Miller, thank you for sharing your God-given photography skills with us. And thank you to the troopers in the photos for their service.
