The transient suspected of killing an El Reno man during a multi-state crime spree will face the charge in Sequoyah County, where he also is charged in the deaths of two more people near Gans.

El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown said Drake, 50, of Birmingham, Ala., is the main suspect in the death of Phillip Emerson, 56, who lived at 204 N. Macomb. That case is filed now in Sequoyah County, authorities reported.

Art Peters has spent 18 years tracking down the history in and around Hinton. That effort helped earn the 1976 El Reno High School graduate a Heartland Regional Emmy for his role in an OETA documentary.

Peters is the curator at the Hinton Historical Museum. He’s been in that position for 21 years.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Not all of Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Todd Hiett’s friends really understand his role in state government.

Hiett said they assume he is a county commissioner, putting down gravel and building county roads.

However, Hiett sits on a three-person board that regulates a range of industries including transportation, oil and gas, towing and public utilities.  

More than 100 students started class last week at Sacred Heart Catholic School.

The school offers education from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.

BlueSTEM AgriLearning Center at Fort Reno recently hosted a video crew from “Oklahoma Gardening.”

A groundbreaking event was set for Friday, Aug. 9 for Youth & Family Services facility expansion in Canadian County. The expansion comes as a response to the growing demand for after-school programs, community events and increased summer camps, said information provided by the nonprofit organization.

YFS aims to further its mission of empowering youth and families by providing care and fostering hope to create brighter futures, while working to mend broken cycles within the community, the YFS directors said. 

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes will host a two-day workshop focusing on unresolved cases related to murdered or missing Indigenous persons. 

LaRenda Morgan, who helped spearhead the creation of Ida’s Law in Oklahoma, said the Aug. 20-22 conference will be hosted at the C&A Tribal Complex in Concho. 

A busy November general election is expected with the U.S. presidential race heading the ballots.

In Canadian County, more than 300 residents have completed election precinct worker training as preparations are made to staff 55 polling places.

“We’re always looking for people,” said Canadian County Election Board Secretary Allen Arnold. 

Canadian County now has 102,969 registered voters, with a strong majority of them Republicans. Interestingly, there are now almost as many registered Independents as Democrats in the county.
