The Oklahoma City Thunder and OG&E unveiled a newly refreshed community basketball court at Youth & Family Services, 7576 East Highway 66.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by a skills challenge, led by Thunder Youth Basketball coaches, free books on the Rolling Thunder Book Bus and interactive activities on the OG&E Thunder Bolt as well as face painters and inflatables.

Originally dedicated in 2014, the El Reno court promotes safe play, community gathering and a love of basketball.

Sandidge asks leaders to back bold welcome to visitors

Motorists coming into El Reno could be welcomed in a big, bold fashion if the city pushes through with proposed new entry and way finder signage. 

At a special city council meeting last week, City Manager Matt Sandidge asked elected officials to consider how new entry and way finding signs could impact the community, as well as those visiting.

Chamber’s 13th Annual Veterans Parade set for Nov. 10 in El Reno

Canadian County will pay tribute to America’s military veterans with the 13th Annual Veterans Parade and Program.

Organized by the El Reno Chamber of Commerce, the event is set for 3 p.m. Nov. 10 in the downtown and will attract participation from throughout the county. 

Chamber director Karen Nance said the day will feature the parade as well as performances and awards following in the Centre Theatre, 110 S. Bickford.

Wedman to retire from Canadian County Fair Board after 46 years of service

The Canadian County Fair Board has to fill a position that has been occupied for close to half a century after a longtime member retired from the volunteer board.

Dan Wedman of Calumet, who has served 46 years on the fair board, announced his decision during a recent board meeting.

Wedman started in 1978 and was board chairman for well over 30 years.

“Dan is irreplaceable,” fair board chairman Kelly Beck said.

Tank battery explodes

Body

No injuries were reported after an oil field tank battery exploded Friday night.

El Reno Fire Chief Jason Duff said the explosion occurred along SW 27th Street near Airport Road.

Military overnight stay

Body

New El Reno Airport Manager Scott Law said this group of U.S. military Apache helicopters dropped into the Municipal Airport last week to stay overnight in El Reno.

The squadron is out of Colorado Springs and had made a fuel stop in Liberal, Kan., before arriving in El Reno.

Law said the unit purchased more fuel here and reported they are “gearing up for deployment” but would not say where.
