El Reno could be expanding.

The city council voted to begin proceedings that would expand the city limits to the south and east. City Manager Matt Sandidge said the move is a “proactive” effort to help control development as Oklahoma City moves to the west. He said the city has also been approached by developers who have an interest in some of the area. 

The 5-0 vote was cast at Tuesday’s December council meeting.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Some young students at Roblyer Middle School may have added another letter to the acronym. In their world, STEM is more like STEEM … which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Empathy and Math.

That’s how a presentation they made last week to a professional landscape architect, a city planner and a city manager came off.

Students and staff from El Reno High School came up with a variety of items as presents for the 2024 Gifts for the Yanks program, which has run for 79 straight years at EHS.

The presents were wrapped and delivered to the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has named T.J. Dill as chief engineer and Steven Gauthe as state maintenance engineer.

El Reno’s Dill will serve alongside Brian Taylor, the current ODOT chief engineer in a co-capacity until Taylor’s retirement this coming summer.

In this senior position, he will oversee all statewide engineering and operations activities.

An El Reno High School graduate, Dill earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at Oklahoma State University in 2011.

In November, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes hosted the three-day Fort Marion Symposium. The symposium is a tribute to the plains warriors and an effort to keep alive the history. 

The symposium opened on the site of the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site in Cheyenne.

Traveling to Concho, the second day was held at the Darlington Chapel/Darlington Agency. On the third day, the event moved to Oklahoma City and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

The first workout for the new Fitness Court at Adams Park was surviving the ribbon-cutting ceremony held last week. Reggie Wassana said the Thursday ceremony was no doubt “held on the coldest day of the year.” A north wind brought with it a wind chill in the lower 20s.

Fortunately for many in the audience, the ceremony came with commemorative stocking caps, scarves and gloves. 

Hundreds of residents, both young and old, from El Reno and surrounding communities lined the streets of the downtown area for the annual Christmas parade and community tree lighting event.

The parade covered several city blocks and featured floats decorated in vivid holiday colors.

Classic cars, horses and some traditional holiday characters like that pesky green Grinch were present.

Santa Claus was in the parade lineup and was given a lift by the El Reno Fire Department. Santa stayed around to greet dozens of children in a special meet-and-greet setting.
