While Elvis made the phrase TCB famous, it was El Reno High School’s softball team taking care of business in its District 5A-2 opener last week against Del City.

El Reno moved to 4-1 on the season with a 21-0 shutout of the Eagles, to extend the Indians win streak to four.

“We have been talking a lot about playing on our level and not down to the level of our opponent. I thought we did a good job of staying on our level,” said El Reno head coach Jason Little.

El Reno High School’s volleyball team kicked off the 2023 season on the road last week, losing a close five-set match to Tecumseh – after winning the first two games.

The Indians built a 2-0 lead behind 26-24 and 25-20 wins.

The Savages rallied to win the final three games by scores of 30-28/25-19/15-8.

El Reno logged 16 aces in the loss, 13 of those by Trinity Black.

Emercyn Looper served up two aces and Jewell Graham added an ace.

The Indians up-front offense posted 29 kills but committed the same number of hitting errors.

Doubles each from Aiden Ellington and Laven Zeier highlighted a 10-hit attack as Union City High School’s baseball team held off a late rally by Verden for an 11-9 win.

The Tigers are now 5-0 on the fall.

Union City built up a 10-4 lead over the first three innings before being outscored 5-1 the remainder of the contest.

The Tigers went 10-of-30 (.333) at the plate with Ellington leading with a 3-of-4 (.750) effort with six runs batted in and another scored.

Union City High School’s fast-pitch softball team suffered an 11-2 defeat to Wayne last week despite logging seven base hits.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-5 on the season.

Union City went 7-of-23 (.304) from the plate with a double each from Kamryn Cook and Trestan Sutton. Skylar Morgan led all hitters with a 3-for-3 effort and a run batted in.

Sutton went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a ribbie. Lily Russell singled and scored a run.

Russell took the loss from the circle with a line of 16 hits, 11 runs, three walks and two strikeouts.

The champion of the 2023 El Reno High School Softball Invitational will have to wait a few days before being crowned after Mother Nature halted play in the final game.

El Reno trailed Enid 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning when play was suspended.

“We are going to finish it when we go to Enid and then play another game after that,” said El Reno head coach Jason Little.

El Reno had two hits when play was suspended, one each from Iliana Ashford and Maddie Moss. Ashford scored on a sacrifice groundout by Kaydence Pawnee.

El Reno High School’s football program held its first day of padded preseason drills in near 100-degree temperatures Friday at Memorial Stadium.

The Indians will host Elk City Friday night in their only preseason scrimmage with junior high teams starting at 5 p.m., with the varsity to follow around 6:30 p.m.

El Reno had an extra week of preseason workouts before opening up the 2023 season on Tuesday at Tecumseh.

El Reno will host its annual tournament on Saturday inside Jenks Simmons Field House.

Calumet High School’s baseball team made quick work of Arapaho-Butler’s pitching staff in its 2023 season opener, cranking out 13 hits en route to a 20-0 run-rule victory.

The Chieftains went 13-of-25 (.520) from the plate with six doubles and a home run. Calumet took advantage of 11 walks against three strikeouts. Logging doubles for CHS were Kaleb and Kyler Thiessen, Derrick Krantzman, Kingston Arnold, Hunter Navanick and Carson Cooper. Brendon Voss recorded a homer for one of his two base hits.

Walking opposing batters took its toll on both Union City and Calumet High School’s fast-pitch softball teams during early-season tournament action.

Union City dropped to 1-4 on the season after losses to Cache (13-3), Fort Cobb/Broxton (15-0), Alex (6-5) and Riverside Indian School (17-0) in the Verden Festival.

Lily Russell and Skylar Morgan threw a total of 12 combined innings over the four-game slate, walking 39 batters against 10 strikeouts. The pair allowed 51 runs off 22 hits.
