El Reno roster a mix of youth, talented veterans

Throughout a handful of preseason scrimmages, El Reno High School’s baseball team has been using gains made by veteran players from last spring and summer and blending it with new players making the jump to varsity action.

El Reno was slated to open the 2024 spring season Friday at Capitol Hill before traveling to Kingfisher on Saturday. The Indians first home game is Monday against Shawnee in the District 5A-1 opener.

Okarche girls exit playoffs in area consolation semis

Okarche High School’s girls basketball team fell two wins shy of earning a repeat trip to the state tourney, losing 50-43 to No.11 Garber in the Class A, Area I consolation semifinals.

The Warriors went into the area round needing three wins to make state and took the first step with a 51-46 decision over No.15 Texhoma. The loss to Garber, however, ended Okarche’s season with a 20-11 record.

RCC women split league road games

El Reno native Ashlyn Evans-Thompson posted back-to-back 20-point scoring nights as Redlands Community College women’s basketball team split a two-game road trip.

The Cougars fell to Seminole State College (66-52) before rebounding for an 83-71 win over Murray State College. The split left Redlands with an 18-8 overall record.

Cougars slowed by losing skid

Body

Unable to break free of its losing streak, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team slipped a spot in the latest NJCAA Region 2 standings after back-to-back road losses.

The Cougars fell to Seminole State College (86-80) and Murray State College (89-65) to extend Redlands losing streak to seven straight.

The losses dropped RCC to 2-11 in league play and into the eighth spot in the standings.

Cougars split road series with Texas-based Cedar Valley squad

Redlands Community College’s baseball team secured bookend wins around back-to-back losses to split a four-game road set with Dallas College-Cedar Valley.

The split with the Suns left Redlands with a 4-15 overall record heading into NJCAA Region 2, Division 2 play against Northern Oklahoma College of Tonkawa.

Redlands scored 52 runs in the series with Cedar Valley, winning 10-4 and 18-6. The two losses were by 18-17 and 10-6 scores. The Cougars went 53-of-124 from the plate for a .427 average.

A 10-point run to close the first period gave Guymon a spark of hope against top-seeded El Reno High School’s girls basketball team in the Class 5A West Region 1 Championships.

It also awoke a sleeping giant.

El Reno erased a one-point deficit with a 26-0 run to open the second period and rolled to a 73-33 victory of the Tigers to remain unbeaten on the season at 24-0.

The Indians have now tied the school record for the most wins in a single season, a mark set during a state run in 2021-22.

Indians stave off elimination with 57-48 win over MacArthur

While it took a game longer than desired, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team made its way back to the area round of the Class 5A playoffs for an 11th straight year after posting a 2-1 record in regional play.

El Reno defeated Lawton MacArthur 57-48 to win the Class 5A West Region 4 Consolation Championship and ended the Highlanders season.

El Reno High School had seven wrestlers competing in the 2024 Oklahoma State High School Wrestling Championships.

Calumet extends win streak into state; Okarche boys back in Elite Eight

Calumet High School’s boys basketball team moved to within a victory of tying the school record for the most wins in a single season, beating Kinta 46-30 to win the Class B, Area I Championship.

The 16-point win, the 26th by double digits this season and the fourth of the playoffs, lifts the top-ranked Chieftains to 29-0 on the season.

It also returns Jacob Mayfield’s team back to the Elite Eight of the Class B state field for a second straight year and the 10th time since 2000. The Chieftains will be making their 12th state appearance since 1998.

El Reno advances four grapplers to state field

For the first time in its 113-year history, the Oklahoma State High School Wrestling Championships will be spread out over three days, with El Reno having four male grapplers in the field bidding for gold.

Niko Gonzalez (126), Matthew Snyder (132), Preston Scott (144) and Hunter Davidson (157) punched state tickets from a tough Class 5A West Regional Championship hosted by Duncan.

Class 5A state was set to start Thursday evening at the Oklahoma State Fair Arena with pigtail and first-round matches for both girls and boys.
