Chieftains use run in first period to pull away from Union City in county rivalry

UNION CITY – An 8-0 run to close the first period helped Calumet High School’s boys basketball team shake off an upset-minded Union City squad last week 77-55 in the rivalry between the two Canadian County programs.

The Chieftains moved to 2-0 on the season with the 22-point win after outscoring Union City 23-13 in the first period. Calumet’s lead was extended through the middle periods behind a 41-25 edge.

Union City, down 64-38 after three frames, went on a 17-13 run in the fourth period to cut into the final deficit. The Tigers fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

Hunter Arnold scored a team-high 27 points after knocking down 4-of-5 attempts from the 3-point line. The guard added six steals, five rebounds and three assists to his totals.

Dalton Belcher followed with 13 points, five assists and three rebounds. Kingston Arnold was the third Calumet player in double digits with 12 points.

James Daughety led in single digits with nine points and a team-high 14 rebounds.

Union City had two players in double figures as Tyler Norton made a trey and 16 points total. J.D. Riley knocked down a 3-pointer to highlight his 11 points.

Laven Zeier paced those in single digits with a trey and eight points, while Kaden Cummings added six points.
