Among the best reads in the state

Body

El Reno Carnegie Library has a ton of stuff for the community to enjoy and El Reno Public Schools is on the verge of having its largest enrollment ever. And if you ever wanted to drive a school bus, your ship just came in.

This bit of information came out of last week’s El Reno Now gathering. The monthly event is hosted by Mayor Matt White and School Superintendent Matt Goucher.

The breakfast event raised more than $450 for The Lord’s Harvest as well, as dozens turned out for the gathering at the Public Safety Center off SW 27th Street.

A system run astray

Body

The influx of special interest money into Oklahoma politics has taken center stage.

Across the nation, there are similar stories. Political candidates and office holders have changed the way they not only run races but represent their constituents in many cases.

That may not necessarily be for the best.

During a recent town hall meeting at Redlands Community College, Congressman Frank Lucas said the time has come for campaign finance reform.

Banner bond vote falls short

Some 54.35 percent of voters cast yes votes in Banner’s school bond election.

However, the proposed $6 million bond issue to fund a building addition failed because a 60 percent majority is required to pass a school bond in Oklahoma.

With nine polling places reporting results Aug. 23, there were 331 votes for the proposition and 278 votes against the proposition.

Another 35 yes votes were needed to approve the Banner Public Schools (BPS) bond project.

Wildcats flexbone attack concern for ER coaches

Body

There are several reasons why Piedmont’s football team is causing El Reno High School’s coaching staff to spend extra preparation time this week ahead of Friday night's first road game of the 2022 season.

Those reasons stem from the Wildcats flexbone offense.

“It’s all about misdirection. It’s the triple option and you’ve got to pick up not only the quarterback but the dive man and the pitch man,” said El Reno head coach Russell Cook.

The extra preparation, from a defensive standpoint, comes from the fact it's an offense not seen much.
