Goucher: We take seriously our students’ safety

Recently, both in our state and across the nation, numerous reports about potential threats to schools have circulated on social media.
Often, these messages lack specific information or location details. In many cases, a singular post has sparked widespread concerns, leading to copycat threats and disruptions across multiple states and communities.
According to law enforcement, over 100 school threats in the Oklahoma City metro area have occurred within the past week. Some individuals have been identified, and charges for Terrorism Hoax and Threatening Acts of Violence (felonies) are being submitted to the Office of the District Attorney.
In today’s age, information spreads rapidly, often without verification. We are asking our students, staff and families to approach what is seen online with care and responsibility.
Spreading unverified or inaccurate information — especially if it does not pertain to El Reno Public Schools — on social media can lead to unnecessary worry, while distracting law enforcement and school administrators from addressing real safety concerns.
We kindly ask for your support in speaking with your students about the importance of not reposting screenshots or messages related to school threats. Resharing unverified or unknown posts spreads panic and anxiety, especially among adolescents, who may struggle to process such information. This can result in students feeling unsafe about coming to school, which disrupts the learning environment for everyone.
Reporting any concerns to school personnel is always the better and more effective option. We strongly encourage our students and families to report any questionable behaviors to law enforcement or school administration, rather than spreading them online.
We understand the importance of keeping our families informed, especially in situations that impact the safety of our students. If there is ever an urgent situation or safety concern, the district will communicate directly with parents and guardians through our mass notification system via text, email and/or phone call.
Please trust that we are committed to timely and transparent communication, ensuring you receive accurate information as soon as possible. By working together, we can maintain a safe and focused environment for learning.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
