Nearly 150 Oklahoma business leaders attend Washington fly-in

WASHINGTON – The Oklahoma State Chamber returned to the Sooner State last week after concluding its annual Washington fly-in where members heard from delegation members and discussed key issues concerning Oklahoma businesses. 

Nearly 150 people attended the multi-day event, which members said serves as an opportunity for businesses to address concerns with members of the Oklahoma delegation and hear from prominent leaders in Washington. 

Cherokee Nation makes millions off illegal immigration

Officials with the Cherokee Nation’s tribal government often tout the importance of sovereignty, a term that in tribal debates largely boils down to control of land lying within historic reservation lines.

One Cherokee government website bluntly declares, “The Supreme Court’s McGirt v. Oklahoma decision recognized what Indian Country has known all along - that our land is our land.”

Bowling down on Route 66

Body

David Dunn and Melissa Stringer are familiar with El Reno.

The couple live in Yukon and will often drive over for an onion burger or to take in special events such as A Small Town Weekend and Smoke on the Water.

Dunn has friends in El Reno. He once bought a used bus from Midwest Bus Sales and his friend, David Tinsley. He painted it lime green and used it to advertise his Oklahoma City bar known as Margaritaville.

He also tried to get the late Mark Gilmore to come work for him when he was operating an establishment that featured steaks.

Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall set to arrive this week

Gary Baumwart and others have been working for months to prepare for the arrival of the Vietnam Memorial Wall that will arrive in El Reno on Wednesday.

The Wall, a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall that stands in Washington, D.C., will travel from the Canadian Valley Technology Center, starting at about 10 a.m., said Karen Nance, executive director of the El Reno Chamber of Commerce.

It’s scheduled to travel west on Route 66 before turning north onto Rock Island, headed to Heroes Plaza in downtown El Reno.

County departments apply for grants to fight epidemic

Two Canadian County departments are seeking grant funds to combat the harmful, addictive effects of opioid drugs. The Canadian County Children’s Justice Center and the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office would receive funding through the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office.

County commissioners last week approved letters of intent for both county government offices to submit opioid abatement grant award applications to the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board.

Okarche expands trustees after vote

OKARCHE - Voters in Okarche approved a proposal to add two new trustees to town government in the Sept. 12 special election.

Voters approved the proposal for two more trustees with 109 votes, 85.83 percent in favor, to 18 votes, 14.17 percent opposed.

Currently, there are three trustees. Two positions will be added, and the existing trustees, Mayor Jeff Sadler and trustees Jason Kroener and Jeff Brueggen will decide whether the additional trustees will represent wards or serve in at-large positions.

United Way kicks off annual campaign

United Way of Canadian County kicked off its annual campaign with a breakfast Sept. 15 at the Dale Robertson Center in Yukon.

The funds raised from this year’s campaign will go to support 16 partner agencies providing health and human services to Canadian County residents.

“We are thrilled to begin our 2023 campaign season,” said Craig McVay, United Way of Canadian County Advisory Board president.

“Together, we can rally for the health of local Canadian County residents with your support. There is power in giving.”
