While they will have their “thumbs” against the wall, El Reno High School’s Academic Team is not planning to back down from anyone as the Indians are prepping for a return to the state tourney.

El Reno was one of eight teams to earn a ticket to the Class 5A State Academic Bowl, to be held Feb. 6 at Rose State College in Midwest City.

The other seven schools at state will be Bishop McGuinness, Altus, Tulsa Edison, Carl Albert, Lawton MacArthur, Tulsa Bishop Kelley and Tahlequah.

Voters head to polls Feb. 9 to decide local, state races

Voters will go to the polls Tuesday, Feb. 9 for the State Senate 22 Primary Election, City of Oklahoma City Ward 1 Council Member Election, City of Oklahoma City Ward 3 Council Member Election and Riverside School Board Member Election, Canadian County Election Board Secretary Wanda Armold said.

Armold said voters should keep the following information and tips in mind as the election approaches.

Paxton files election protection measure in Senate

Following one of the most controversial and debated elections in U.S. history, Sen. Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, has filed legislation to ensure the continued integrity of Oklahoma’s election system.

Senate Bill 523 would prohibit any political subdivision, agency or government official from entering into a legal agreement or court settlement prescribing election procedures that conflict with election law, which is both statutorily and constitutionally set by the Legislature. 

State Chamber supports two new student transfer bills

OKLAHOMA CITY - Two bills which create ways students could more easily transfer to a public school to meet their educational needs have the attention of the State Chamber of Oklahoma.

The business-focused organization is endorsing the bills written by Rep. Jon Echols and Sen. Adam Pugh.

House Bill 2673 and Senate Bill 783 create a method for students to transfer to another public school with the state dollars following that student.

Senior living housing plan gains support

A planned 200-unit senior living housing complex got the full support of the El Reno Municipal Planning Commission last week even though some area residents fear the development could create problems, especially related to drainage.

Gary Owens Development Inc. intends to build the 55 and over market rate project on East Elm, just to the west of the El Reno Cemetery.

Owens has a similar development at SW 15th and Czech Hall in Mustang.

ERPS to use third party for COVID-19 vaccine

El Reno Public Schools faculty and staff will join other Canadian County schools in using a third party to administer the COVID-19 vaccination.

Superintendent Craig McVay said El Reno will use Passport Health to vaccinate the district’s 400 employees. He made the statement during the weekly El Reno Live program hosted by Mayor Matt White.

McVay said the timetable for administering the vaccines is not yet set, but the hope is that it will take place in February. El Reno will join Yukon, Mustang and Piedmont in turning to Passport Health for the vaccines.

Lasting memory of dad

The family of David Airington has established a scholarship in his memory in a move that will help El Reno High School graduates for years to come.

Airington, proud of the fact he was the second child born at then Parkview Hospital when it opened in 1954, died Dec. 23.

Dana Gibson with the El Reno Public Schools Foundation said the scholarship will be endowed and would be for any student who graduates from EHS. She called the memorial a “wonderful and a fitting tribute to a man who genuinely loved El Reno.”
