Skunks can cause more than smelly problems for pet owners

Body

The nose knows. Even the slightest hint of a skunk’s presence can send pet owners scrambling to find a way to get rid of the scent.

But it isn’t just the odor that is cause for concern. Skunks are the primary reservoirs of rabies in Oklahoma, followed by bats, said Dr. Barry Whitworth, Oklahoma State University Extension veterinarian.

When it comes to rabies, Whitworth said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

OMRF study shows strawberries lower serious health risks

Body

As little as 130 calories per day could make a significant impact on your cardiovascular health. That’s approximately how many calories are in about 2.5 cups of strawberries. And it’s the amount a new study led by Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation physician-scientist Hal Scofield, M.D., found is needed to lessen our risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

“This is the ideal health finding,” said Scofield, a physician and medical researcher in OMRF’s Arthritis and Clinical Immunology Research Program.

A Ride to Remember Sheriff’s Lanning rolls through Friday

Body

A motorcycle group called “End of Watch: Ride to Remember” will visit cities across the country where a law officer was killed in the line of duty in 2020, and one of the cities will be El Reno.

Canadian County Sheriff’s Lt. Shirley Lanning died in a crash last year. Her unmarked patrol car collided with another vehicle along Northwest Expressway on Friday, Feb. 14, killing her and injuring a Piedmont couple, an Oklahoma City police report states.

Reports said Lanning apparently experienced a possible stroke prior to the collision.

Legion of dirt work

Body

Crews from Anadarko Dozier are digging up the south side of Legion Park in a move designed to create more storage for water during heavy rains.

City Manager Matt Sandidge said the process should be complete in about 45 days and will include new sod being laid.

The city council approved the work as a way to improve drainage through the creek area that feeds into the pond at Legion Park.

A second drainage project will begin soon when Community Development Block Grant money is used to construct a lined drainage canal to the north of the Legion Park pond.

Riding the route

Body

Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell has been touting the importance of Route 66 to local municipalities, especially when it comes to tourism dollars flowing in from other places.

Such a push from state leaders is welcome news to George Higgins, who owns and serves as rally master for the annual Mother Road Ride Rally.

“I think cities need to embrace Route 66 and I wish there were cities which did because it would give us more places to stop. It would make it easier to find different places,” said Higgins.
