Rising food costs continue to make it challenging for families on limited budgets to put healthy meals on the table, but some relief is on the way.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently recalculated the Thrifty Food Plan, which is used to calculate Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) benefits based on family size.

The recalculation will increase SNAP (formerly food stamps) benefits across the nation. In Oklahoma, recipients will receive about $36 extra per person per month.

The first El Reno Community Day and Fly-In was hailed as a “great event.” That 2020 celebration of El Reno and aviation attracted an estimated 2,000 people to the El Reno Regional Airport.

Last Saturday, the second such event probably more than doubled that turnout and sent expectations for next year into orbit.

“I think it was just a fantastic day for everyone involved,” said Airport Manager Adam Fox.

Jason Gipson was 23 years old when he spent a year as a U.S. Army Infantryman in Iraq. That was in 2004.

Today, Gipson is 40. He has a wife and daughter. He also has nightmares. That’s why he’s very thankful to have Dale.

Dale is his dog, a soon-to-be 4-year-old mix of lab and pit that helps him make it through the night.

Gipson suffers from PTSD - post traumatic stress disorder. Like many veterans, he saw things in Iraq. He may have had to do things that people probably weren’t created to do.

A 13-year-old Maple School student was airlifted to OU Medical Center Monday after the school bus he was riding in ran off the road and into a ditch.

The boy’s name was not released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, but reports said he was admitted into the hospital in “good condition” after suffering a leg injury. The child was reportedly pinned inside the bus and had to be extracted by emergency personnel.

The air display portion of the Second Annual El Reno Community Day and Fly-In brought a wide range of planes and helicopters to the El Reno Regional Airport.

Under the direction of David Schultz Airshows, the display began with two Sikorsky H-34 helicopters flying together in formation for the first time in more than 20 years.

Used heavily during the Korean War, the helicopters flew several passes around the airport before stopping along the flight line and hovering less than 50 feet off the ground to show their versatility.

Canadian County officials have accepted an offer from state legislative staff to help with redistricting.

New county commissioners, state legislative and congressional district lines are redrawn after every 10 years, following the federal census.

Canadian County commissioners have signed an agreement with the Oklahoma House and Senate redistricting offices, which will provide “redistricting technical support” using data from the 2020 U.S. Census.

“We could use some of their help,” said Commissioner Jack Stewart.

Canadian County Health Department will host a vaccination event at the new Canadian County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon.

“We are not sure what the volume will be because there are so many other providers out there, but we wanted to make this as convenient as possible,” said Health Department spokesperson Maggie Jackson.

All three vaccines will be available for first and second doses. Pfizer will be available for third doses for immuno-compromised and boosters for high risk and people over 65.

An El Reno band, Sever Me, will open for Matt Ferrell when he brings his comedy show to El Reno. The show is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Centre Theatre, said Kristin Richardson with the El Reno Community Theatre.

Ferrell extended the invite to the local band after serving as one of the judges in the recent Battle of the Bands.

Sever Me placed third in the contest also put on by the ERCT.

A native of southwest Oklahoma, Ferrell was a rodeo cowboy and owned a garage door company before tackling comedy on a full-time basis.
