Dozens of people lined Bickford and Rock Island in downtown El Reno Sunday to celebrate the men and women who served this nation in the military during the annual Canadian County Veterans Day Parade.
This was the 10th year for the colorful event that featured more than 40 parade entries, according to El Reno Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Karen Nance.
The chamber created the Veterans Day Parade.
The El Reno Tribune’s Honoring Our Heroes section has the following stories:
The history of Veterans Day worldwide
While both honor military service, Memorial and Veterans Days do differ
Marjorie “Margie” Kross never met her biological father.
He died at the hands of the Japanese military while serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. His remains were buried in a cemetery in the Philippines city of Manila.
Kross was in El Reno last week. She was here to, as she said, “continue putting the puzzle together.”
Kross’ biological father was Howard Morgan. He was a 1936 graduate of El Reno High School. He’s also one of the “44” from El Reno public schools who died as a result of serving in World War II.
Only voters that live in Ward 2 will be voting in Tuesday’s El Reno city council race, said Wanda Armold, Canadian County Election Board secretary.
“Most precincts contain more than one ward and only those voters that are registered at an address within the geographical boundaries of Ward 2 will be eligible to vote on Nov. 9,” Armold said by email.
The 10th Annual Veterans Day Parade and Program will be this Sunday, Nov. 7 in downtown El Reno.
Organized by the El Reno Chamber of Commerce, the afternoon will begin with the parade at 3 p.m.
Chamber Executive Director Karen Nance said more than 40 entries are expected to participate, coming from throughout Canadian County. The highlight of the day will be recognizing area veterans, including those named this yearvs Veterans of the Year.
That list includes Wayne Dickerson, Fred Garrett, Stan Higgins, Archie Jones, Robert and Cliffornia Rolle and Kendall Watson.

Canadian County’s new natural hazard mitigation plan is now in effect.
Commissioners approved a resolution finalizing the document.
The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires Canadian County to update the plan every five years, so its communities remain eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) non-emergency, hazard mitigation grants.
Commissioners in late July approved the county’s revised hazard mitigation plan – designed to reduce loss of life and property before a disaster occurs.
Five worn-out Canadian County sheriff’s vehicles are headed to Washita County to help train law enforcement personnel.
Sheriff’s deputies have “run the life out of them,” Canadian County Undersheriff Kevin Ward, said, referring to five Crown Victorias.
The group includes one 2006, two 2007s, one 2008 and one 2011.
The inventory has been transferred from the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Canadian County commissioners agreed to the plan last week.
