The Center of Family Love (CFL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those living with intellectual disabilities, is seeking applications for its 2023-24 Teen Board.
This initiative, comprised of a select group of high school students from surrounding Oklahoma schools, aims to foster a sense of community and empowerment while breaking boundaries and transforming lives.
Redlands Community College President Jena Marr recently met with Reggie Wassana, governor of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, to sign a formal agreement designed to generate awareness of American Indian culture as well as to enhance programs that encourage and support high school students in the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes who are interested in pursuing a college degree.
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO) will host its 29th annual Down Syndrome Festival & 5K at the Myriad Botanical Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 30.
“We serve approximately 1,000 families in the central Oklahoma area,” said Sarah Soell, executive director of DSACO.
“This event is not only our largest fundraiser, but also meant to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome living within our community and their abilities.”
A former Okarche police officer was shot and killed in her eastern Canadian County home.
Cleveland County sheriff’s deputy Jordan Cannon was 40.
Her husband, Vaughn Cannon, 41, was booked Aug. 30 into the Canadian County Jail on a first-degree murder complaint. He also is a Cleveland County deputy.
The shooting occurred near Sara Road and SW 29th southeast of Yukon. The couple lived in southwest Oklahoma City, and Oklahoma City police are investigating the case.
Canadian County 4-H’ers received a healthy boost in donations at this year’s Canadian County Free Fair due to the donation of a dunk tank by the Oklahoma Environmental Management Authority (OEMA).
While the tank itself was donated by OEMA, the Canadian County 4-H Foundation also chipped in $500 so 4-H teen leaders could paint the tank green and add the 4-H logo to the sides.
“A dunk tank is a chair that resides over a large tank of water,” Canadian County 4-H Extension agent Todd Branson said.
Okarche residents will decide if they want more than three people deciding the town’s business. It could soon be five residents with voter approval in a special election set Tuesday, Sept. 12.
And the idea to add two new town trustees to local government is about wanting to hear more voices on decisions, said town trustee Jason Kroener. Okarche voters will vote whether to add two trustees to town hall government.
Kroener ran for the Ward 1 trustee position in April and was elected over challenger Jeremy Miller.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Despite one school district’s call for minimum safety standards in the wake of a fatal shooting at a high school football game, the governing body for Oklahoma school athletics took no action to change current security regulations.
The board of directors for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association discussed, but made no decisions, about the possibility of establishing stricter minimum requirements.

A new roundabout is coming to Canadian County.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) plans to install a roundabout on U.S. Highway 81 at the State Highway 66 intersection in El Reno. A roundabout is among engineering innovations being implemented by ODOT.
Drivers slow down as they approach an intersection with a roundabout, but don’t come to a complete stop. A roundabout creates less “stop-and-go” traffic because vehicles do not stop, according to ODOT spokesman Bryce Boyer.
One family sold a business to another family, but as it turns out, it stayed in the family.
A bit more distant, but still there’s a connection.
For decades the Rother family operated the Culligan water franchise in El Reno. Recently, David, Mark and Bob Rother announced they were selling the business to another family with a long tradition in the water business.
As it turns out, the families are related.
