Lord’s Harvest receives help from Yukon students

Students from Yukon’s St. John Nepomuk Catholic School helped out at The Lord’s Harvest last week in what founder and director Nikki Pruitt called a “wonderful blessing.”

The Lord’s Harvest is an El Reno food ministry founded and operated by Pruitt, her family members and community volunteers.

The St. John’s students helped stock shelves, unload trucks and scrubbed pallets used to stack food items.

Organizers asked that only the first name and initial be used to identify the students.

Commissioners get advice about historic jail rehab

Canadian County commissioners heard suggestions about how to proceed with a possible rehabilitation of the historic county jail.

Constructed more than 100 years ago, the county-owned building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The old jail is at the corner of Rogers and Evans next to the renovated stables near the Canadian County Courthouse and Administration Offices.

The long-vacant building sorely needs a new roof and windows.

Commissioners OK tribal funds for Cardinal Point

Canadian County commissioners agreed to distribute funds from a newly-awarded federal grant to the county’s family justice center.

Cardinal Point, which serves Canadian County’s domestic violence survivors, will receive $50,000 from the Local Assistance and Tribal Consistency Fund.

“This is a two-year grant for funding from the federal government to the county,” Commissioner Dave Anderson said. “It’s up to us to determine where we want to invest those dollars.”

OKC FAA center, roads and tribes big winners in House bill

WASHINGTON – Despite heated comments and opposition from minority Democrats, the House Appropriations Committee has adopted a Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Bill for the 2024 fiscal year.

Subcommittee chairman Tom Cole (R, Moore) said Oklahoma will be in line for a significant amount of funding under the legislation.

Oklahoma joins coalition opposing FDIC bank bailouts

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Gentner Drummond has joined a coalition of nine attorneys general urging the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to reverse course on its proposed rule to impose a special assessment on banking organizations.

The would-be rule is an effort to recover the costs of bailing out elite depositors like venture capitalists and foreign nationals at Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank.

Smoke on the Water, an Outlaws dream hangout

Chatting about sanctioned races to drag boat drivers, you hear terms like time trial, reaction and dial-in times.

However, ask those same drivers about Outlaw-style events such as the recent Smoke on the Water, and the terminology usually shrinks to one simple word – speed.

“I do like Outlaw-style racing because you never know how fast anybody really is going compared to sanctioned races. Everyone turns them (engines) up,” said Mike King from Chouteau.

Lowe says school safety legislation was top priority

In his opinion, Rep. Dick Lowe said the most important piece of legislation passed at the Oklahoma State Capitol this past session dealt with school safety.

“It’s not if it’s going to happen, it’s when it’s going to happen,” Lowe told the audience at last week’s El Reno Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast.

The school safety measure carves out $150 million over a three-year period as part of the more than $5 billion education package approved by lawmakers.

Police perform sternum rub on breathing, unresponsive teenager at Lake El Reno

A juvenile was found breathing but unresponsive Saturday night at Lake El Reno. Assistant Police Chief Kirk Dickerson said officers were called to the scene.

Dickerson said officers performed a “sternum rub” in an effort to get the teen to respond.

He said police did not make any arrests because they were unable to determine where the teen got the alcohol.
