Second-half goals secure shutout for El Reno girls

Taking advantage of a swirling wind at their backs, El Reno High School’s girls soccer team scored two second-half goals to defeat Kingfisher 3-0 last week in the 2021 home opener.

El Reno improved to 3-1 on the season.

The Indians led 1-0 at the break after Caroline Huber scored an unassisted goal in the 27th minute of the first half.

El Reno went up 2-0 in the 12th minute of the second half when Bri Vickers took a crossing pass from Taylor Decker and found the bottom left side of the net.

El Reno High School’s boys soccer team ended a three-match losing streak on the pitch last week, defeating Kingfisher 2-0 in the 2021 home opener. The Indians improved to 1-3 on the season.

El Reno outshot the Yellowjackets 15-4 and held an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. The Indians also led in possession touches (65-35) and corner kicks (4-0).

El Reno’s goals came in the first half as Vincent Benedix scored in the 23rd minute off assists by Collin Vickers. Three minutes later, Vickers made it a 2-0 match with an unassisted goal.

El Reno sends seven lifters to state

El Reno High School’s boys powerlifting team qualified seven for the Class 5A state meet after winning the Northwest Oklahoma Regional Championship with 190 points.

El Reno was hosting three state meets at Jenks Simmons Field House, including both the Large School and Small School divisions.

Bradley Chavers won regional gold in the 123-pound class after increasing his weight totals by 20 pounds. His total weight of 875 pounds featured a 340-pound dead lift and a 320-pound squat.

RCC sweeps Pioneers in conference games

Redlands Community College women’s and men’s basketball teams swept home games last week from Western Oklahoma State College to gain a split in recent Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

The women defeated the Pioneers 48-37 to remain in second place in the OCAC standings with a 3-2 mark after a recent 65-49 loss to Murray State College.

The Cougars improved to 6-2 on the season with the split.

Kristen Murcer scored a team-high 20 points for the two games to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists.

Cougars win one of four in Seward County series

Body

Despite logging 13 extra base hits, Redlands Community College’s baseball team managed just one win over a four-game road set with Seward County College.

The Cougars defeated the Saints 7-6 in game two as Jace Acheson got the win in relief. He pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings, striking out two and walking one.

Redlands dropped the other games by scores of 6-2, 10-4 and 17-7 to slip to 2-8 on the season.

Skyler Fenton led the Cougars offense for the series with six hits, two of those doubles, leading to four runs batted in and scoring once.

McReynolds named All-State

Body

For the second consecutive year, El Reno High School has a student named Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic All-State. The honor is shared by only 100 public high school seniors statewide.

El Reno’s Ella McReynolds was one of the 100 selected from 379 nominations statewide.

The Academic All-State selections represent 77 schools in 69 Oklahoma school districts.

The 49th Annual Canadian County Junior Livestock Show and Sale got under way over the weekend at the county fairgrounds and was set to conclude Tuesday with an online virtual auction. The 2021 show will be the final one at the current fairgrounds before moving to the county’s new fairgrounds now under construction.
