The Oklahoma Independent Stockgrowers Association will hold its Fourth Annual Convention from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Frisco Center in Clinton. The keynote speaker will be Bill Bullard, CEO, R CALF, Billings, Mont.

The cattle industry is in a significant state of change with many cattlemen experiencing financial stress, said a news release promoting the event. R CALF (Ranchers Cattlemen Action Legal Fund) has been providing national leadership supported by Independent Stockgrowers Associations in almost every state.

In 2018, Oklahoma lawmakers approved hundreds of millions of dollars in tax increases, which officials said were necessary to significantly increase teacher pay and reduce the state’s teacher shortage.

New figures from the Oklahoma State Department of Education show that approach did not achieve the promised results.

El Reno High School Academic Team had a good start to the year, placing seventh out of 17 teams at the National Academic Quiz Tournament held at the University of Oklahoma.

Riley Ray ranked third overall individually in the tournament with an El Reno record score of 620 points as a freshman.

The team also posted an El Reno record of six round wins with a 6-5 overall record and was one win away from qualifying for the national tournament in this first competition of the year.

Next up was a best two out of three tournament against Piedmont for 5A OSSAA Districts.

Leading 4-2, Matt Snyder’s 3-point play would spark a 12-1 run over the final three minutes of the first period and the Chieftains rolled from there to a 72-25 win over Binger-Oney.

It was the sixth straight opening-day win for the Chieftains and puts Calumet in the early Washita Valley Conference standings lead.
