Emergency managers gather at Expo Center for training

Emergency responders across southwest Oklahoma came to Canadian County to train so they can better serve their communities.

The Southwest Oklahoma Emergency Management regional workshop was held at the Canadian County Expo and Event Center, 3001 Jensen Road East. The annual training event was postponed from February due to a winter snowstorm.

A man who escaped in February from El Reno Federal Correctional Institution has been recaptured – and now faces additional charges.

Oklahoma City police officers and special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation apprehended Bryan Scott Miller, 36, in Oklahoma City March 12.

Even before he was found, a federal grand jury charged Miller March 1 with escape from custody, federal prosecutors said.

The El Reno Masons provides funds to supply fire prevention booklets.

The National Fire Safety Council developed the Fire Pup Program, presented to many elementary-age children by local fire departments, to make them aware of fire danger. The booklets provide a fun way to learn fire safety.

Redlands, ER Masonic Lodge honored by state regents

Redlands Community College and El Reno Masonic Lodge 50 were among 26 higher education-business partnerships recently honored with the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education’s Regents Business Partnership Excellence Award.

The duo has long worked together to better the community, with El Reno Masonic Lodge contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years.

One month left to apply to the wildlife department’s Youth Camp

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s annual Wildlife Youth Camp provides youth ages 14 to 16 an opportunity to explore careers in the world of wildlife and fisheries management.

The 2022 Wildlife Youth Camp will be held June 12-17 at the OU Biological Station near Kingston.

The deadline to apply is April 15. All applying potential campers must have been enrolled in school the previous year.

Okarche students sweep awards

Students from Okarche Junior High’s eighth grade recently swept the top three places in the annual Delta Kappa Gamma essay contest. Izabella Beam was the first-place winner, Ethan Kirby took second, while Easton Roby placed third.

The multi-county essay contest is sponsored each year by the Theta chapter of the professional organization of women educators.

The three will be honored at a reception in Kingfisher on April 9.

Beam’s essay will be entered in the statewide competition. All three are students of Lyndal Westmoreland.
