An Edmond resident who calls Yukon home, Dawson is the owner of Rich Strike, the winner of the 2022 Kentucky Derby.

Everybody loves an underdog story and Rich Strike’s story is among the best. Purchased for $30,000, Rich Strike had one win to his name and was not in the Derby field until the day before the race. Listed as an 80-1 long shot, Rich Strike surged from the back of the field to overtake the favorites and win the Derby.

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma’s newest professional sports team, the Potawatomi Fire, is 14-6 and in fourth place in The Basketball League’s central division in its inaugural season — not bad for a team that is less than a year old. 

“We’re wrapping up our first season with the Potawatomi Fire and we’re excited about how the team and community are investing in each other,” said David Qualls, the Fire’s general manager and designated tribal spokesman for the team.

Hunka earns UCO’s Cooper scholarship

The University of Central Oklahoma College of Education and Professional Studies recently awarded El Reno resident Dana Hunka a scholarship for the upcoming fall and spring semesters in recognition of academic achievements and outstanding service to the university.

Hunka, a junior majoring in organizational leadership, received the Leland and Pauline Cooper Endowed Scholarship.

Local students named to SNHU’s President’s List

Among those local students named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Winter 2022 President’s List are Mackenzie Spears, Tanya Garrison and Shayla Fuston of El Reno.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above are named to the President’s List.

However, there is a different atmosphere surrounding El Reno High School’s football program as the Indians kicked off spring drills last week with a new head coach and two lead coordinators.

Indians secure two spots on OSCA All-State team

While edged out of the playoffs via tiebreaker points, El Reno High School’s boys soccer team was well represented on three postseason honors squads, including All-State accolades.

Senior forward Edgar Garcia and midfielder Christian Diaz were named to the West squad for the 2022 Class 5A Oklahoma Soccer Coaches Association’s All-State Game.

That will be played June 10 at Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa, with game time set for 8 p.m.
