Calumet ups odds to make state tourney

Body

CALUMET – While its offensive output looked like that of Las Vegas long shot, Calumet High School’s baseball team left no question about being a solid bet to make the Class B State Championships.

The third-ranked Chieftains used a 50-1 scoring blitz to sweep past Erick and Dover last week to win the District 3 Championship. Calumet, now 22-3 on the fall season, heads to the regional round with a shot at state on the line. The top two teams in each of the four regional sites, to be announced Monday, earn state passes.

The Tigers path to the district title started with a 6-1 win over Carney/Agra before sweeping Ripley by scores of 6-3 and 4-3.

Honor Ride

Body

Bill Tempero got choked up while talking about the first Honor Ride held at Fort Reno in memory of the military men and women who are buried at the historic cemetery there.

President of the U.S. Cavalry Association and Museum, Tempero watched late Monday afternoon as more than two dozen soldiers rode their horses in procession along the dusty road that leads from the main area of the fort to the cemetery.

A restored military ambulance, a horse-drawn wagon that was used in the 1870s, followed the procession.

Fake lottery winnings focus of new mail scam

Body

Some area residents have been getting mail telling them they have won a lottery contest. That's news to them since they didn’t enter a contest.

One of those receiving the news was Canadian County Sheriff Chris West.

West said his notification came in the form of a certified mail notice.

He had to sign for the letter at the post office.

“It’s all a scam,” West said. He said the scam was actually sent to the address of the sheriff’s office.
