Avenging an earlier one-goal loss to the Bucks, Redlands Community College’s soccer team earned its first road win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain.

The victory came in the second of four straight road matches for the Cougars, who improved to 3-8 on the season and 2-6 in the NJCAA Region 2 standings – which is sixth.

Halley appointed as special judge

El Reno attorney David Halley will be the county’s next special judge.

Canadian County District Judges Paul Hesse and Jack McCurdy and Special Judge/District Judge-Elect Khristan Strubhar made the announcement of Halley’s selection Sept. 28.

Canadian County has two district judges – currently Paul Hesse and Jack McCurdy. Judge McCurdy earlier this year announced he would not seek re-election and elected to retire effective Nov. 30.

Current Special Judge Khristan Strubhar filed for – and won without contest – the bench being vacated by McCurdy.

Sheriff employee faces charges for theft from inmates

A detention officer was fired after an investigation found she had allegedly stolen $570 in cash from two inmates at the Canadian County Jail.

Katie Denise Wade, 32, of Moore, was charged Sept. 27 in Canadian County District Court with embezzlement of state property.

Assistant District Attorney Walter Mengden alleges Wade “received money to be placed in the inmate trust account, and knowingly made false entries in that account received on behalf of the county.”

C&A Tribes land USDA grant for research into better ways to raise bison

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes have received a $7 million grant from the USDA to help create a more climate-friendly way to raise bison.

The award is from the 2022 Partnerships for Climate Change Commodities Grant.

The announcement of the grant said the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes will serve as the “lead partner” under this grant with “major partners” including Frasier Bison LLC, the Earthshot Institute, Mad Agriculture, Eastern Shoshone Tribal Buffalo Program and the Intertribal Buffalo Council.

El Reno Masonic Lodge #50 recently presented a check to the Redlands Community College Aggie Club for $10,417 to support the organization’s scholarship program for agriculture students.

“The Aggie Club appreciates the support of Masonic Lodge #50 and the opportunities this partnership provides our students,” said Annie Pearson, Dean of Academics, head of the Agriculture Department and Aggie Club faculty sponsor.

Jail inmate faces more time after allegedly punching detention officer

A Canadian County Jail inmate already facing 12 years in prison for allegedly stealing a car and breaking into a house now faces five more years for allegedly punching a detention officer.

Oklahoma City’s Tristan Kane Sandlin, 26, is accused of “willfully and unlawfully striking” victim David Easter “in the head and body with his fists,” according to court documents.

Sandlin was formally charged Sept. 21 with assault and battery on a detention officer in Canadian County District Court.

Honey Springs Battlefield offering Civil War-style ammo crate-building course

CHECOTAH ― Participants will have the opportunity to build their own Civil War-style wooden ammo crate on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. during a special make-and-take workshop at Honey Springs Battlefield.

In this outdoor class, led by instructor Jake Krumwiede, participants will walk through the easy steps of piecing together a sturdy storage crate from pre-cut panels using light construction techniques.
