Tigers edge out Geary in four OTs; Warriors roll

It took four overtimes before Union City High School’s girls basketball team defeated Geary 71-69 in Washita Valley Conference action to improve to 9-7 on the season.

The Tigers, now 2-4 in the WVC standings, were coming off a 58-39 non-conference loss to Burns Flatt-Dill City.

In that loss, Bree Goad scored a team-high 12 points, followed by Emily Griggs with 11. Mackinzie DeLong scored five points, while Megan Goad and Oceanna Schranz added four points each.

Four Canadian County officers have been appointed to decide which architects to interview to prepare plans and cost estimates for a new county courthouse complex. County commissioners would then hire a firm to develop the design of a multi-level courthouse/administration building in the county seat.

Estimated construction costs have not been determined.

Tillman jail agrees to start housing Canadian County inmates

The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office may now take inmates from here to the Tillman County Jail in Frederick. The two jails are about 138 miles apart.

A new agreement allows Canadian County to use bed space at the Tillman County Jail at a cost of $45 per day, per inmate.

Canadian County houses inmates in other jails when the local jail is full. The jail at 304 E. Evans has a 194-bed capacity.

Sample ballots are now available for the Feb. 14 election. Voters can download a sample ballot using the State Election Board’s OK Voter Portal at oklahoma.gov/elections/ovp or pick up a copy at the Canadian County Election Board during normal business hours.

Saint Katharine Drexel Retirement Center, through a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, welcomed a new bus last week.

Kim Bowles, executive director at Saint Katharine’s, said the grant is intended to enhance the mobility of seniors and individuals with disabilities.

The bus, a 2022 Chevrolet StarCraft Minibus, has a handicap-accessible lift as well as safety cameras, defibrillator, fire extinguishers, first aid kit, hand sanitizer dispenser, extra lights and other safety features.

Friday, Jan. 20 is the last day to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the Feb. 14 City of Yukon Council Member at Large, City of Yukon Special Election, Riverside School Special Election, Deer Creek School Primary Board of Education Election, El Reno School Primary Board of Education Election and Mustang School Special Election, Canadian County Election Board Acting Secretary Allen Arnold said.

Forward Jaiana Wiggins made a basket with 40 seconds to play as Redlands Community College women’s basketball team jumped back into the thick of the NJCAA Region 2 title chase with a 56-55 win over Connors State.

“We were down by one and Jaiana came up with the big basket and then we got a couple of good stops on the other end that allowed things to go our way,” said Redlands head coach Jay Niehues.

The Cougars improved to 9-9 on the season and 2-2 in the region standings with the rally against the Cowboys, who hit 14 3-pointers in the loss.

Though the seedings race for the NJCAA Region 2 Championship is still in its early stages, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team has its work cut out.

The Cougars went into Monday night’s game at Murray State College sitting in the bottom half of the Region 2 regular-season standings with a 1-3 record after dropping an 86-63 home game to Connors State College.

Redlands slipped to 9-9 on the season with that loss and will have 12 straight league games to close out the regular season, six of those at home.
