Okarche speech team places seven in Weatherford Invitational

Seven members of the Okarche High School Speech Team recently competed in the Weatherford Invitational Tournament, with every Okarche participant placing in the contest.

Maddie Vogt and Anna Shirey took third in public-forum debate. Riley Black placed first in poetry and teamed with Reagan Marler to take first in humorous duet.

Kylie Bailey earned first place in monologue.

Sara Leck was second in humorous interp and a finalist in poetry. Rylie Bomhoff took first in humorous interp and second in dramatic interp, and was a finalist in monologue.

El Reno qualifies first two grapplers for state tourney

MUSTANG – The first tickets to the 2023 Oklahoma State High School Wrestling Championships were punched here last week for two El Reno High School grapplers.

Competing in the Girls West Regional, Kaylee Davis and Hannah Koen placed fifth or better in their weight classes to earn state spots. The pair combined for 43 of El Reno’s 54 points.

“I could not be prouder of those girls. From the moment their feet hit the ground on campus they started training and were 100 percent bought in. They embraced the process and trusted us coaches and worked their tails off every day.

McGuinness gifts Indians heartbreaking 74-72 loss in see-saw double OT bid

It took six periods before the season series between El Reno High School’s boys basketball team and rival Bishop McGuinness ended in a non-amicable split on Valentine's Day.

The Irish scored the final three points to pull out a 74-72 double overtime victory and handed El Reno its second straight loss.

The Indians dropped a 59-33 road game to Class 4A’s top-ranked Kingfisher the night before.

El Reno was set to close out the regular season against the Oklahoma City Storm, a home-schooled program, which has beaten the Indians the past four seasons.

Meeting for a third time this season, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team had a love-hate type of contest with Bishop McGuinness on Valentine’s Day – one that did not end in heartbreak.

El Reno used an 18-1 run in the fourth period to shake off the upset-minded Irish and secure a three-game season sweep of McGuinness with a 56-34 non-conference victory.

“We got up big and then we just kind of thought we were going to stay up on them and relaxed a little bit and let them come back on us,” said sophomore guard Reagan Bugaj.

EHS powerlifters place in Bethel meet

El Reno High School’s powerlifting teams kicked off the 2023 season recently with a pair of top 12 finishes at the Bethel Invitational held at the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center in Shawnee.

The El Reno boys had three placers who produced 47 points to place the Indians 11th overall out of 20 schools.

Malachi Nicholson (181) led the effort with a first-place finish with a total weight of 1,190 pounds.

He won the squat with a lift of 455 pounds as well as the dead lift with a 510-pound effort. He added a 225-pound bench press.

Brown logs 25 points in losing effort, Redlands slide extended

Body

Redlands Community College women’s basketball team is struggling with a season-high four-game losing streak following an 89-61 setback to Connors State College.

The Cougars fall to 10-15 on the year with the loss and 3-8 and seventh place in the NJCAA Region 2 standings.

Sydney Brown was the top scorer for Redlands in the loss, hitting 9-of-17 shots en route to her 25 points. She added nine rebounds and three assists.

Brooklyn Haywood made 7-of-14 shots to close with a line of 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
