Commissioners allow retired officer to keep firearm, badge

A 57-year law enforcement veteran - who retired 18 months ago - is now officially able to keep his Canadian County sheriff’s firearm and badge.

Canadian County commissioners made it official at their July 10 meeting, voting 3-0 to allow Lt. Mike Grimes to retain these county-issued items.

“This is for Mike Grimes,” Canadian County Undersheriff Kevin Ward told commissioners.

GIRL – Erin and Robert Morris of Denton, Texas, are parents of a girl, Emilia June, born May 26 in Lewisville, Texas. Emilia weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 20.5 inches in length.

Maternal grandparents are Glen and Stacey Miller of El Reno.

Great-grandparents are the late Archie and Verlin Miller and the late David and Shirley Shelton.

Paternal grandparents are Gart and Kelley Morris of Jenks.

Great-grandparents are June Morris of Owasso and the late Bob Morris and Geneva Crow of Rowland, Ark., and the late Vernon Crow.

Benefit for Austin Mogg set for July 22 at Elks

The following is a letter by Joe Mogg, father of Austin Mogg. Austin suffered a serious eye injury several weeks ago.

As most of you know, my son, Austin Mogg suffered a serious and life-changing eye injury this summer, on Memorial Day.

I established a GoFundMe page to provide his family some financial assistance and we have received private donations as well from family and friends. This has been a tremendous help for Austin, Ali, Eli and Zyer.

Increased rains in Oklahoma this past spring have brought some not-so-welcome friends.

Fly and tick populations have increased, which means cattle producers are fighting an uphill battle this summer with these blood-sucking pests. The cattle industry suffers $1.3 billion in losses annually from horn flies alone. They are considered the No.1 external parasite for cattle across the country.

Lewis steps down as El Reno mat coach

After guiding El Reno High School’s wrestling program back from the brink of extinction, Coach Tyrone Lewis has resigned his position and is headed back to the college ranks.

Less than a day after signing his resignation letter in El Reno, Lewis was announced as the new men’s wrestling coach at Baker University based in Bolden, Kan., south of Lawrence. The Wildcats wrestle on the NAIA level.

A friendly young rivalry

For two seasons Josh Finnigan has served as crew chief for Matt Miller and his child, Radley, as the father-daughter duo race on the Southern Drag Boat Association series.

However, this year the crew added a new member who has made the trips to Texas even more of a family affair. Finnigan’s own daughter, Teagan, has joined the team as a driver.

“It’s 100 percent a family affair. My wife (Katrina) jokes this is how we spend our summer vacations, racing boats.
