Soccer has grown into the fourth most popular sport in the United States with over 31 percent of all Americans considering themselves a fan, according to a 2019 Gallup survey.

And at Redlands Community College, there may be more of those fans in the stands considering a number of the players on the women’s team are from local high schools.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association fields 1,057 women’s teams alone over its three levels of competition, with 347 of those being Division 1 programs.

Council pledges to clean up city, seeks court help

With a pledge to “clean up” El Reno, the city council last week voted to seek condemnation through court action of one property.

The council also gave two other owners a bit more time to get their respective properties in order. A house owned by Ed Graham at 716 S. Rock Island was condemned by the council in a unanimous 5-0 vote. An attorney for Graham said the house had been vacant for 20 years, but Graham had only owned it for less than two years.

Health department’s $3.6 million renovation project gets under way

A $3.6 million remodeling project is under way at the future site of the Canadian County Health Department.

The inside of a 33,000-square-foot-building at 6100 E. Highway 66 is being renovated for the new county health clinic and offices.

In June 2022, commissioners spent $6 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal stimulus funds to acquire the property near SH-66 and Evans Road.

Commissioners pave way for parking lot, sidewalks

A contractor has been hired to replace the parking lot and sidewalks for the Canadian County Assessor’s Office.

Canadian County commissioners awarded a $213,197 low bid contract for a parking lot replacement project at North Choctaw and Highway 81.

Atlas Paving Co.’s price is $201,997 to install a new asphalt surface on the parking lot. Meanwhile, King Electric will be paid $11,200 to provide basic electricity to charge assessor vehicles.

Frontier Chevrolet General Manager Shane Tuck last week presented Canadian County Sheriff Chris West and a few of his deputies with a check for $5,000 as part of the Chevy First Responder Appreciation program.

The program is a partnership allowing Chevrolet to support local first responders who serve and protect communities around the nation.

Two rural water districts tap into county stimulus funds

Two Canadian County rural water districts were awarded shares of Canadian County’s federal stimulus funding.

The Okarche Water District will receive $136,619 and the Banner Water Authority will receive $180,795 from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

County commissioners last week voted 3-0 to approve their final ARPA fund distribution for rural waterline projects. They had $317,414 left in the rural water category.

Steady play on both offense and defense, which carried Calumet High School’s baseball team through a 16-game late-season winning streak, abandoned the Chieftains when it was needed most – the state title game.

Calumet, ranked No.2 in the state, committed four errors leading to six runs for top-ranked Fort Cobb-Broxton as the Mustangs run-ruled CHS 10-0 to win the 2023 Class B Fall State High School Baseball Championship.
