OHS girls extend win streak; UC surging

Thirteen different players scored as Okarche High School’s girls basketball team won its seventh straight game with a 59-19 decision over cross-county rival Calumet.

The win pushed the Warriors to 15-7 on the year and 2-0 versus small schools inside Canadian County.

The win was the third in four days for Okarche after beating Strother (55-23) and Amber-Pocasset (34-21).

Katie Parham paced the Warriors in scoring for the three-game set with 31 points after putting up 11 in the win over Calumet. Harper White added nine points in the win over CHS and 24 for the set.

Calumet sweeps county battles with win over Okarche; Tigers prowling

Pushed by a 16-12 run in the fourth quarter, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team is king of the hill among Canadian County’s small schools following a 55-51 win over Class A’s fourth-ranked Okarche.

Calumet, the top-ranked team in Class B, improved to 24-0 on the year and extended its regular-season win streak to 44 games dating back to last season.

Three-game win streak snapped by region leader

Redlands Community College women’s basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped last week with a 65-40 road loss to region front-runner Connors State College.

The 25-point loss dropped Redlands to 14-5 overall and back into a tie for second place in the NJCAA Region 2 standings with a 4-2 mark – even with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

The Cougars entered the game with the Cowboys after beating Murray State College (68-65) to extend their win streak to three games.

Back-to-back losses have slipped Redlands Community College men’s basketball team two spots down in the latest NJCAA Region 2 standings.

The Cougars dropped a home game to Murray State College (94-83) before taking to the road for a 105-63 blowout loss to Connors State College, leaving RCC with a 10-10 overall record.

Redlands is now seventh in the regional standings with a 2-4 record.

Deazhon Perkins scored 33 points against Murray State and led all Redlands scoring for the two-game set with 60 points. He added five rebounds and a steal.

Public education highlight of breakfast gathering

El Reno public education was on full display at last week’s El Reno Now gathering.

The quarterly event is a partnership between the city of El Reno and El Reno Public Schools. It featured a brief update from City Manager Matt Sandidge, but the morning belonged to the local education system.

Superintendent Matt Goucher introduced the site Teachers of the Year as well as the District Teacher of the Year.

He said the school district could not accomplish what it does without the support of the community. “El Reno just gives and gives and gives,” Goucher said.

Survey says?

The city of El Reno wants to hear from you.

That’s what City Manager Matt Sandidge said last week at the El Reno Now breakfast gathering. The city and El Reno Public Schools partner for the quarterly event.

Sandidge said the city is conducting a survey to hear what residents want from their municipal government and how services might be improved.

Sandidge said the survey is intended to gauge the “community pulse.” It is open from now until March 1.

“We want to hear from you about the services we provide,” Sandidge said.

Hirst will not seek fifth term as court clerk

Canadian County District Court Clerk Marie Hirst will not seek re-election after some 28 years in public service. Now in her 16th year as Canadian County’s elected court clerk, Hirst said last week she will not seek re-election to a fifth, four-year term.

“It’s been a complete honor to have been elected for four terms, and that the voters had that much faith and trust in my knowledge and experience to do the job,” Hirst said.

“It’s been a great ride for the most part.”

El Reno High School girls basketball coach Jennifer Douglas presented senior Pauline Black-Harmon with a plaque last week honoring her accomplishment as EHS’ all-time leading rebounder.

She broke the record set in 1996 by LeAnn Bezner.
