Okarche girls exit playoffs in area consolation semis

Okarche High School’s girls basketball team fell two wins shy of earning a repeat trip to the state tourney, losing 50-43 to No.11 Garber in the Class A, Area I consolation semifinals.

The Warriors went into the area round needing three wins to make state and took the first step with a 51-46 decision over No.15 Texhoma. The loss to Garber, however, ended Okarche’s season with a 20-11 record.

RCC women split league road games

El Reno native Ashlyn Evans-Thompson posted back-to-back 20-point scoring nights as Redlands Community College women’s basketball team split a two-game road trip.

The Cougars fell to Seminole State College (66-52) before rebounding for an 83-71 win over Murray State College. The split left Redlands with an 18-8 overall record.

Cougars slowed by losing skid

Unable to break free of its losing streak, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team slipped a spot in the latest NJCAA Region 2 standings after back-to-back road losses.

The Cougars fell to Seminole State College (86-80) and Murray State College (89-65) to extend Redlands losing streak to seven straight.

The losses dropped RCC to 2-11 in league play and into the eighth spot in the standings.

Cougars split road series with Texas-based Cedar Valley squad

Redlands Community College’s baseball team secured bookend wins around back-to-back losses to split a four-game road set with Dallas College-Cedar Valley.

The split with the Suns left Redlands with a 4-15 overall record heading into NJCAA Region 2, Division 2 play against Northern Oklahoma College of Tonkawa.

Redlands scored 52 runs in the series with Cedar Valley, winning 10-4 and 18-6. The two losses were by 18-17 and 10-6 scores. The Cougars went 53-of-124 from the plate for a .427 average.

City sees 3 percent increase in February sales tax collections

El Reno is showing positive growth in the area of sales tax, Assistant City Manager Tim Young reported at the February city council meeting.

Young said El Reno’s share of sales tax for the month totaled almost $1.2 million.

He said that was a 3 percent increase over the same period a year ago.

El Reno was one of four municipal governments in the county to experience a jump in sales tax revenue for the reporting period.

Jury trial set for May in shooting death of former ER officer, sheriff’s deputy

A jury trial is set in May for a Canadian County man charged with his wife’s murder.

Vaughn R. Cannon, 41, is accused of shooting to death Jordan Cannon in August 2023 at their eastern Canadian County home.

Jordan Cannon, 40, was a Cleveland County sheriff’s deputy and former Okarche and El Reno police officer. Vaughn Cannon also was a Cleveland County sheriff’s deputy and previously a Canadian County deputy.

Vaughn Cannon was charged Sept. 5 in Canadian County District Court with first-degree murder – deliberate intent.

Commissioners approve system for p-card buys

Canadian County will implement a purchasing card program after approving a new county policy and designating eight card holders.

County commissioners approved the change last week.

“We’re moving into the p-card world,” Commissioner Tom Manske said.

“This is a great start. I’m excited about this. This is going to make business easy.”

County government officials have decided to use the purchasing, or p-card program to streamline the way certain county purchases are made from companies that don’t accept purchase orders.
