Pair named to fill spots on council

Amy Neathery will fill the El Reno City Council Ward 1 seat for the next year, while Dr. Brian Schafer will take over the duties of the Ward 4 position.

Neathery and Schafer were appointed to the council seats at a special meeting held Thursday.

It was the first open meeting chaired by Mayor Steve Jensen.

Council had met earlier in an executive session meeting to discuss litigation the city is involved in.

Jensen was joined by new Ward 3 council member David Black and Ward 2 Councilman Peter Stapperfend. The votes for Neathery and Schafer were unanimous.

State tax credit redirects funds for education

You can give your money to the state of Oklahoma, or you can give your money to the school of your choice and receive a state tax credit.

That was the message presented recently at an event hosted by Sacred Heart Catholic School.

The small El Reno school that reopened in the 1990s after closing in the 1960s has 112 students, said longtime Principal Shannon Statton. This year, 33 of those students are receiving tuition assistance through the Tax Credit Scholarship Program.

Russell-Murray Hospice to host Caring for Generations Gala

Russell-Murray Hospice will host its first-ever Caring for Generations Gala. The event is scheduled for Jan. 21 at the Palace Event Center on Banner Road.

The gala will feature a silent auction, dinner and live music. Tickets can be purchased on the RMH Facebook page or by phone at 405-262-3088.

The purpose of the event is to help support Russell-Murray Hospice patients.

Welcome Rumble

Newly-elected El Reno Mayor Steve Jensen mugs for the camera with Oklahoma City Thunder mascot Rumble the Bison during the recent El Reno Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting.

Jensen joked with the mascot, saying he would give him the key to the city, but all the locks may have been changed.
