EHS student attends online version of Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute

Nearly 270 young artists from across Oklahoma spent a week studying with internationally renowned faculty and celebrity guest artists at the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute (OSAI).

Among those studying acting was El Reno student Kali Grizzle.

The attendees were selected from over 1,000 applicants during a competitive statewide audition process last winter, and they studied one of eight artistic disciplines: acting, chorus, creative writing, dance, drawing and painting, film and video, orchestra or photography.

Nearly 675,000 Oklahomans cast their ballot Tuesday in an election that will not only have deep ramifications for November’s general election, but also the state’s future. 

In a historic vote, voters in one of the nation’s most conservative states passed a ballot initiative to embrace a key component of former President Barack Obama’s health care plan.

Republican and Democrats, meanwhile, selected, or narrowed down, their nominees for several pivotal congressional and legislative races that will be decided later this year.

The power of reading, especially over the summer months, has been the main focal point of Wesley United Methodist Church’s Project Transformation.

The project started eight years ago with the goal to help elementary students in El Reno maintain or improve their reading skills over the summer break.

This year, Project Transformation had planned to up the summer offerings with a bookmobile after partnering with El Reno Public Schools.

Historic military plane to prepare aircraft mechanics given to CV Tech

A U.S. military airplane built in the mid-1950s to prepare young pilots for flying an array of Vietnam-era jets has been recalled to active, non-military duty.

The North American Aviation (NAA) T-28C was replaced by more modern military aircraft in the early 1980s. Now, one of these historic planes will be used to prepare aircraft sheet metal workers and mechanics for Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) licensure at Canadian Valley Technology Center’s El Reno campus.

C&A celebrate first land trust deal with BIA

On June 4, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes signed an agreement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to place tribal property located in Geary into trust status.

This was the C&A’s first successful effort to place land into trust since the Tribes Constitution was ratified in 2006.

“The tribes have a long history of trying to place purchased lands into trust status for self-determination and to improve the tribes’ economic development,” said Cheyenne and Arapaho Gov. Reggie Wassana.

The spirit of giving

Some El Reno youngsters were in the giving spirit last week, setting up a lemonade stand and offering their product for free.

Emmie Evans, Teagan Finnigan, Cheyenne Denwalt and Jentri Denwalt were accepting donations and said they planned to use the donated funds to purchase snacks to give to nurses who work at local nursing homes.

Center of Family Love telethon raises more than $500,000

OKARCHE – More than $500,000 was raised for the Center of Family Love during a live stream telethon that was held in place of the nonprofit’s usual gala, an event that for the past two years delivered more than $1 million to help support the home for adults living with intellectual and physical disabilities.

The live stream event was held Saturday night and made history on several fronts.
