COVID-19 financial, legal relief still available for residents

Body

I heard a story about an Oklahoma City resident who had three months of living expenses in savings. But the COVID-19 wave hit, and just like that, the money was wiped out due to their full-time job loss.

This person had finances, a plan, and in an instant, it was gone. The situation itself isn’t unfamiliar for people and families in 2020. Many are suffering from full-time or part-time job loss or reduced hours without income readily available to pay for necessities.

ER limits fan size for sports in winter

Body

With local cases of COVID-19 remaining high and Canadian County moving into the red zone on the Oklahoma State Department of Health Alert System, El Reno Public Schools has issued new policies concerning winter sports.

“We decided to do this as our way to battle the spread and trying to give the kids a chance to play. That is our number one goal. They signed up to play and that’s what we want them to do,” said El Reno Athletic Director Rodney Haydon.

Ready to return

Body

A quick glance at her roster and it’s not hard to see why El Reno High School girls basketball coach Jennifer Douglas is excited to get the 2020-21 season started.

El Reno is coming off a 15-12 season which took the Indians to within one basket of making a fourth straight trip to the Class 5A state tournament.

From that squad, Douglas returns four starters and 10 total players with experience in one of the toughest conferences in the state.

Rural water authority hit by complaints

Body

A longtime board member of the Canadian County Water Authority, along with a veteran former employee, say the authority is being run in a manner that should draw the scrutiny of county commissioners.

Jayne Franks has been a member of the authority board for 25 years. Mary Culver spent about that long as the office manager for the entity, formerly known as the Banner Rural Water District. They claim the authority is in violation of Open Meetings laws, as well as providing preferential treatment for some.

They also allege reckless spending of funds.

Laptop computers stolen from library

Body

Someone apparently checked out some library equipment without permission.

El Reno police said five Google Pixel laptop computers were taken from the Carnegie Library. The theft was discovered Nov. 16 by library staff.

The computers were being stored at the library, police said.

The estimated value of the equipment was $3,300, reports said.

In another police matter, reports said an officer pulled over a Hyundai Elantra being driven without the headlights on.
