Girls shake cold start to snap a three-game slide against Del City

Surviving a horrendous opening five minutes, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team found its scoring groove over the final 26 minutes to snap a three-game losing streak against Del City in Suburban Conference action.

El Reno, ranked seventh in the state in the latest Class 5A poll, improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the league standings. The Indians remain 1-0 in games that count toward the Suburban Conference title as they will face the Eagles again on Feb. 5.

For more than 14 minutes, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team went toe-to-toe with Del City last week as the Indians exchanged baskets with the Class 6A powerhouse in a key Suburban Conference matchup.

Unfortunately, the effort seemed to wake up the sleeping giant.

Riding an advantage in size and strength in the paint, Del City used a 13-1 run to close out the first half and cruised to an 81-58 win over the Indians. The loss was the third in a row to Del City as El Reno slipped to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Suburban Conference standings.

Calumet wins title, remains undefeated; Okarche loses tourney consolation game

Doubling up their opponent in scoring in the championship game, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team won its second tournament of the season with a 84-42 blowout of Stratford.

The 42-point victory gave Calumet, ranked fifth in Class A, the Alex Longhorn Classic title for a fourth straight season.

Calumet won the three games of the tourney by an average of 32 points after beating Cement (18th/B) 87-44 and Alex (18th/A) 51-39 en route to the finals.

Okarche repeats Three Rivers title; Calumet girls third in ALC

For a sixth straight year, Okarche High School’s girls basketball team asserted itself as one of the top teams in the Three Rivers Conference, defending its tournament title with a 52-29 win over Fairview.

The Warriors have placed no worse than third over the six-year span, while finishing runner-up three times before taking the 2020 title. En route to the 2021 championship, Okarche defeated Oklahoma Bible Academy (62-32) and Watonga (58-54) before the 23-point blowout over FHS.

El Reno’s First Baptist Church will be the site for COVID-19 vaccinations beginning Jan. 18.

The Canadian County Health Department is moving the vaccination site from Redlands Community College after the Friday, Jan. 15 distribution in an effort to deliver shots on a daily basis.

“Redlands has been great and we are thankful for everything they have done. There are some scheduling conflicts coming up when Redlands starts back to in-person classes and some upcoming events they have,” said District 2 Public Information Officer Maggie Jackson.

Husmann selected as interim ICAN head

The board of ICAN has chosen associate director Carolyn Husmann to serve as interim executive director. The group’s executive director, Eric Feuerborn, is stepping down, and Husmann agreed to fill his shoes until a new executive director is found.

A nonprofit, ICAN is an intervention and crisis advocacy network. Formerly known as Women’s Service and Family Resource Center, ICAN is the domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault aspect of Cardinal Point, the domestic violence center.

State owes ER city coffers $3 million for storm damage

The state of Oklahoma owes El Reno $3 million, but Mayor Matt White said the city is not holding its breath expecting to collect the money anytime soon.

Speaking during the El Reno Live Facebook program, White said the money is owed from the 2019 tornado, as well as the most recent ice storm that struck in late October.
