Union City, Calumet open playoffs after dropping games

Union City and Calumet High School’s slow-pitch softball teams were trending in opposite directions despite both entering the playoffs with losses to close out the regular season.

Union City, ranked sixth in Class 2A, was hosting a district tourney after losing 16-0 to Class B’s fourth-ranked Lookeba-Sickles to close the regular season at 21-14.

The Tigers went 3-1 in the recent Fletcher Spring Swing with wins over Geronimo (12-2), Mt. View-Gotebo (12-11) and Central (4-1).

The loss was to Class 2A’s fourth-ranked Cyril 7-0.

Calumet, UC pick up wins, playoffs start

State-ranked Calumet and Union City High School’s baseball teams earned hosting rights for the district round of the playoffs and charged into the postseason on winning notes.

Calumet, ranked fourth in Class B, took a 13-7 record into the playoffs after defeating Hinton 9-1 to close out the regular season. The Chieftains were coming off a 1-2 run in the Roff Invitational that included a 4-3 win over Class A’s sixth-ranked Tushka.

The setbacks were to Class A’s top-ranked Rattan (11-1) and Class B’s No.2 Roff (13-0).

RCC splits with CASC, still in hunt

Redlands Community College’s baseball team stayed in the thick of the chase for a spot in the postseason tournament by splitting a recent four-game set with Carl Albert.

Each team won a home game, with Redlands logging wins by scores of 14-3 and 7-1.

The Cougars losses came by way of 10-4 and 14-5 margins.

The split left Redlands with a 19-25 overall record and an 11-13 mark and fifth place in the NJCAA Region 2, Division II standings.

The Cougars 30-28 lead in runs scored came off a 38-of-119 (.319) batting average with nine extra base hits.

Perfect pitcher

El Reno High School’s baseball team lost the consolation finals at the 2023 89ers Classic in Guthrie by way of a 4-1 loss to Perkins-Tryon, but the big story came a day earlier.

Sophomore pitcher Gavin Tinsley threw his first-ever perfect game in the Indians 8-0 shutout win over Kingfisher.

It was El Reno’s second win of the year over the Yellowjackets.

“I was extremely excited and proud of him. Gavin pitched with conviction and commanded all three pitches and was dialed in from the first pitch to the last,” said El Reno head coach Keith Hill.

Guymon dampens ER playoff hopes

El Reno High School’s girls soccer team had its two-match win streak snapped last week as playoff hopes took a serious, if not fatal, setback with a 5-0 shutout loss to Guymon.

It was El Reno’s fourth shutout loss in league play as the Indians slipped to 5-6 on the season. The loss dropped EHS to sixth in the district standings at 2-4.

Guymon led 2-0 at the half after squeezing two of its seven shots off the hands of El Reno keeper Bri Vickers.

Indians dealt 11-1 setback after early GHS scoring blitz

Guymon scored on its first and fourth shot attempts of the first half and steamrolled past El Reno High School’s boys soccer team 11-1 in a critical District 5A-2 match for both teams.

The win kept the Tigers within striking distance of third, while the loss kept El Reno locked in seventh place in the district standings at 1-5. The Indians slipped to 3-8 on the season.

El Reno golfers face tough fields in DC, Kingfisher tourneys

While dropping back below the 400-stroke mark, El Reno High School’s boys golf team ran into a strong field at the 2023 Kingfisher Yellowjackets Invitational.

El Reno carded a round of 387 to place 21st in the 23-team field, beating Putnam City North (401) and Anadarko (442).

Oklahoma Christian School won the event with a 274, followed by Heritage Hall (291) and Elk City (297).

Cooper Park led El Reno’s effort with a 92, followed by Jackson Albrecht with a 94.

Cougars tie for third in MB Classic

Tuning up for a run in the NJCAA Southwest District Championship, Redlands Community College’s golf team tied for third last week at the 2023 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.

Playing at the Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City, the Cougars carded a 36-hole total of 606 (305/301) to tie with Bellevue University.

Oklahoma City University won with a 573 and Texas Wesleyan University was second at 592.

Clara Peake paced Redlands with a 144 tally (74/70), which tied her for fifth in the individual medalist chase.

Sweeping by the Spartans

It took two days and an array of elements from Mother Nature, but El Reno High School’s baseball team earned its first district sweep of the 2023 season over the Southeast Spartans.

Originally set for a one-day doubleheader, El Reno took the first game by a 15-0 score. However, play was halted due to thunder and lightning and eventually called because of rain.

Game two was played a day later in mid-70-degree temperatures and a brisk south wind, which El Reno used to post a 20-1 victory. The Spartans avoided the shutout with a run in the final inning.

Thinclads medal in Ponca City

Body

El Reno High School’s track team made the long trip north to Ponca City for the 2023 Jerry Runyan Wildcat Relays, turning in two top eight finishes in the team standings.

The El Reno girls placed fourth in the Large School Division with a season-high 48 points. The boys had two teams in the standings, with the varsity taking eighth with 12 points and the junior varsity earning two points and placing 12th.
