Solid start toward U.S. 81 Battle

There is little time to dwell on the negatives or bask in the positives from the first preseason scrimmage as El Reno High School’s football team is less than five days from the 2023 kickoff.

Known commonly as Zero Week, the Indians will play at Chickasha Friday night to open their 10-game regular-season slate under second-year head coach Russell Cook.

“We are going to focus on us each and every day in practice. We’re going to try and get better 1 percent each day. This is a non-district game and we would like to go get a win, but we are going to focus on us.

El Reno drops game to defending champs

El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team had its four-game win streak snapped last week with an 11-1 setback to defending state champion Piedmont. The loss dropped El Reno to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the District 5A-2 standings.

The Indians are now fourth behind the Wildcats, Carl Albert and Noble – both visiting El Reno this week.

El Reno’s run in the loss to Piedmont came in the fourth inning. Jacy Little singled down the third-base line and moved to second on a sacrifice groundout by Ryah Hardy.

First tourney action

El Reno High School hosted its own early-season volleyball tournament over the weekend at Jenks Simmons Field House.

The Indians went 2-2 for the event and now sit at 2-3 for the season.

ER shuts out Del City in District 5A-2 opener

While Elvis made the phrase TCB famous, it was El Reno High School’s softball team taking care of business in its District 5A-2 opener last week against Del City.

El Reno moved to 4-1 on the season with a 21-0 shutout of the Eagles, to extend the Indians win streak to four.

“We have been talking a lot about playing on our level and not down to the level of our opponent. I thought we did a good job of staying on our level,” said El Reno head coach Jason Little.

Tecumseh rallies to defeat El Reno spikers in ’23 season opener

El Reno High School’s volleyball team kicked off the 2023 season on the road last week, losing a close five-set match to Tecumseh – after winning the first two games.

The Indians built a 2-0 lead behind 26-24 and 25-20 wins.

The Savages rallied to win the final three games by scores of 30-28/25-19/15-8.

El Reno logged 16 aces in the loss, 13 of those by Trinity Black.

Emercyn Looper served up two aces and Jewell Graham added an ace.

The Indians up-front offense posted 29 kills but committed the same number of hitting errors.

Tigers still unbeaten, Calumet extends run

Doubles each from Aiden Ellington and Laven Zeier highlighted a 10-hit attack as Union City High School’s baseball team held off a late rally by Verden for an 11-9 win.

The Tigers are now 5-0 on the fall.

Union City built up a 10-4 lead over the first three innings before being outscored 5-1 the remainder of the contest.

The Tigers went 10-of-30 (.333) at the plate with Ellington leading with a 3-of-4 (.750) effort with six runs batted in and another scored.

Union City, Chieftains drop road SB outings

Union City High School’s fast-pitch softball team suffered an 11-2 defeat to Wayne last week despite logging seven base hits.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-5 on the season.

Union City went 7-of-23 (.304) from the plate with a double each from Kamryn Cook and Trestan Sutton. Skylar Morgan led all hitters with a 3-for-3 effort and a run batted in.

Sutton went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a ribbie. Lily Russell singled and scored a run.

Russell took the loss from the circle with a line of 16 hits, 11 runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
