Brothers, Russell spark Union City winning streak

Morgan Brothers knocked down a 3-pointer to highlight her nine first-period points as Union City High School’s girl basketball team remains undefeated with a 57-13 win over Wanette.

The Tigers are 3-0 on the season after a 68-64 overtime win over Binger-Oney.

In the win over Wanette, Union City led 23-4 after one period, getting four points from Kamryn Cook and a pair of 3-pointers from Bree Goad.

The Tigers led 43-7 at the break and 55-7 after three periods.

Chieftains rolling over opponents, Tigers gain victory

Calumet High School’s boys basketball team stifled two opponents on both ends of the floor last week to remain unbeaten on the 2023-24 season.

The Chieftains defeated Lookeba-Sickles (112-41) and Lomega (76-46) to move to 3-0.

The wins extended Calumet’s regular-season winning streak to 23 straight games dating back to last season.

Jacob Mayfield’s team has logged 286 points in three games, an average of 95 per contest, while posting an average winning margin of 55 points.

Cougars open new campaign on even ground

It’s been an even split for Redlands Community College men’s basketball team in the early stages of the 2023-24 season, with the Cougars posting a 3-3 start.

Redlands defeated Langston University’s junior varsity (82-60), Lamar (88-81) and Nationwide Prep Academy (101-67).

The losses were to Frank Phillips (82-70), Clarendon College (100-82) and New Mexico Junior College (114-71).

Deazhon Perkins leads the Cougars in scoring through six games with 98 points off 33-of-59 (56 percent) shooting, while collecting 20 rebounds and 10 steals.

Evans-Thompson aids Redlands quick start

Redlands Community College women’s basketball team is off to a fast start thanks in part to some hometown help from El Reno High School’s all-time leading scorer.

Ashlyn Evans-Thompson transferred back to Redlands after playing her freshman season at East Central University in Ada.

The sophomore has made an immediate impact, leading the Cougars in scoring after seven games.

Honoring those who served

El Reno High School held its annual Veterans Day assembly titled “Never Forget and Honor,” with 20 current or former soldiers from different branches of military service in attendance.

The national anthem was sung by the EHS Vocal Choir, while presenters Hattie Eaton and Radley Slimp welcomed guests and presented a history of Veterans Day.

El Reno FFA officers Rylan Fleenor, Aubrey Rakestraw, Sophie Kamm, Josie Felton, Sam Curtis and Casimir Baeriswyl took turns reciting different parts of the poem “So God Made a Soldier.”

Wesley UMC rolls out new Bookmobile

Wesley United Methodist Church debuted its new Bookmobile at the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

The dinner, which provided more than 800 meals to residents, was held Nov. 4 at the Canadian County Extension Center at the old fairgrounds.

Amy Neathery said all children attending the dinner were permitted to climb into the Bookmobile and pick out a free children’s book. Kids took home approximately 85 books.

Kindergartner Brooks Bengs, an El Reno Public Schools student, was one of the first kids to step into the new Bookmobile.

Silent donor to match Gold Star Plaza funds

The effort to raise funds to expand the Gold Star Plaza at Memorial Stadium has gotten off to a fast start after an anonymous donor pledged to match contributions up to $35,000 from now until Dec. 15.

El Reno High School English teacher and school historian Brian Rukes said the donor approached him with the “amazing offer” after Rukes made public the plans to add to the plaza that honors those from El Reno who gave their lives in service to the United States while serving in wars spanning from World War I through Vietnam.
